A message from the MUSE Director
In these recessionary times, MUSE's role of balancing the needs of our participating publishers, who are nonprofits of all types and sizes, libraries, and the academy remains crucial for scholarship. We approach this balancing act in many ways.
A new and important example is the addition of back issues for titles that are not covered by JSTOR. This is an opt-in program for our publishers, and MUSE and the publishers are sharing the production costs, which allows us to add a significant amount of content at no additional cost to subscribers.
The fixed-royalty program for new or less well-established titles is another great example of meeting the needs of publishers and editors, who continue to start new journals to meet the evolving needs of scholarship, while not putting a subscription burden on libraries. These titles, which to users are no different than any title in the Premium Collection, have production costs paid by the publisher and are not included in the Premium subscription price.
MUSE is part of a university press and thus part of the Johns Hopkins University and we have not been immune to the financial difficulties caused by the economy. In addition to the university-wide cost-cutting programs, MUSE voluntarily reduced fiscal 2010 expenses by 10%. Much of this came from travel and exhibits; we won't be traveling to as many library and scholarly conferences, which is unfortunate and, we hope, temporary. We won't be exhibiting at Charleston or Midwinter, but we will see you at ALA Annual in DC.
Our mission requires ongoing growth and development. As always, it will be judicious, controlled growth; however, the decisions needed to control growth have gotten harder. Still, we are not going with the status quo for 2010 or beyond. Thus, we haven't frozen prices nor have we frozen collections. We have significantly reduced the number of new titles we will accept for 2010, from over 40 in 2009 to fewer than 20 in 2010. As a result, we've reduced our price increases. We pay attention to the collections and don't set prices arbitrarily. But given our title growth, you will see increases of between 4% and 6%, depending on the collection. The exception is the Social Sciences Collection; because the total number of titles in this collection will not increase for 2010, the price will remain flat.
If you're contemplating canceling your MUSE subscription, we encourage you to talk with us about your budget situation. MUSE has six collections; the largest ones are not right for every library. We're also authorized by the publishers of select MUSE titles to make them available as single titles, disaggregated from a collection. We'll work with you to evaluate your usage and determine the best fit for your institution.
These are difficult times, and they're likely to get harder before they get better. But with open communication and an understanding of our respective needs, goals, and expectations, we're confident we will get through them together and emerge stronger.
Questions about the collections and pricing may be sent to MUSE Customer Service at muse@press.jhu.edu.

Subject: Project MUSE News: MUSE Adds More Search Features
Project MUSE is excited to announce two new features that help users more easily locate articles relevant to their research. MUSE also introduces a new option to custom print and package articles in MUSE journals.
The new features are:
- A 'Search this Journal' search box. This search box appears on each journal's home page, on the Table of Contents (TOC) of each issue, and on each article. The 'Search This Journal' feature enables a user to quickly check all issues of the journal in MUSE, with a single search, for all articles in that journal pertaining to a particular subject.
- Summaries (abstracts) for articles. MUSE now provides a link for the summary of each article. Users know that the ability to scan summaries of articles is essential to determining which articles are relevant to their research. That ability is now available in MUSE. The Summary links appear on the TOCs and in search results, next to the article format options of HTML and PDF.
New Option for Custom Print
Custom Print is a service provided by Sheridan Press that allows a user to click on a link from MUSE and purchase an article or groups of articles for the purpose of creating a custom publication. MUSE is one of the first online providers to activate this service. The user may choose either print or electronic format for the purchased articles. At this time, articles contained in 'The American Indian Quarterly' published by the University of Nebraska Press are the only articles in MUSE for which this option is available. On the article page, look for the link 'Custom Print' to initiate the transaction.

MUSE has been on Facebook for some time now, but we just secured our own URL and wanted to pass the word on to MUSE users. Find MUSE at www.facebook.com/ProjectMUSE. Become a fan of MUSE! You can also follow us on Twitter, @ProjectMUSE.

Subject: Project MUSE News: New titles, updates for 2010; back issues expansion
PROJECT MUSE ANNOUNCES NEW TITLES, COLLECTION UPDATES, PRICES FOR 2010
Expansion of back issue program to provide complete run of content from many titles
Project MUSE is pleased to announce that 11 new titles have been confirmed to date for addition to its online journal collections in 2010. Contracts are pending with several new publishers and MUSE expects to announce up to five additional titles for next year. List pricing for the journal collections for 2010 has also been set. MUSE is also excited to expand its pilot program incorporating previous volumes of MUSE titles into the collection holdings. Back issues from over 60 journal titles will be made available at no additional cost to subscribers over a four-year period beginning in 2010.
The following journals are confirmed to join MUSE in 2010:
American Book Review
Black Camera: a micro journal of black film studies
Black Music Research Journal
Canadian Theatre Review
Collaborative Anthropologies
Hispania: a journal devoted to the interests of the teaching of Spanish and Portuguese
Journal of Modern Periodical Studies
Native South
Pennsylvania History: a journal of Mid-Atlantic studies
Qui Parle: Critical Humanities and Social Sciences
Studies in American Fiction
In light of current economic conditions, MUSE is strictly moderating the growth of the journal collections for 2010, resulting in significantly smaller price increases than in previous years. The 2010 price for the Premium Collection, MUSE's flagship journal collection, represents an increase of only 6%, half that of previous years' increases. All journals joining MUSE for 2010 will be included in the Premium Collection.
Prices for the Project MUSE Standard, Basic Research, Basic College, and Humanities collections are increasing by only 4%. Additional titles will be included in each of these collections for 2010, as follows:
Standard Collection:
The Middle East Journal
Sewanee Review
Studies in the Novel
Basic Research Collection:
American Music
Classical World
Comparative Drama
Basic College Collection:
American Music
Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies
Transactions of the American Philological Association
Humanities Collection:
Buildings & Landscapes: Journal of the Vernacular Architecture Forum
La corónica: a journal of medieval Spanish language, literature and
cultural studies
Journal of Modern Greek Studies
Theory & Event
U.S. Catholic Historian
The price for the MUSE Social Sciences Collection will remain flat from 2009 as a result of the attrition of some titles and the addition of very few titles in this area for 2010. Project MUSE continues to offer tiered pricing based upon institutional Carnegie classification and relative usage for North America, and on World Bank country income classes and institutional programming for the rest of the world.
One title, River Teeth: A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative, will cease to contribute new content to Project MUSE after 2009. The title will no longer be published by MUSE participating publisher, the University of Nebraska Press.
BACK ISSUES TO BE ADDED
MUSE will be incorporating back issues of many journals, adding value to our collections and enhanced depth to users' research experience. During the pilot phase of this initiative, MUSE added back issues of selected journals published by the Johns Hopkins University Press, in several cases resulting in the complete run of a title being made available online. Starting in July 2010 and continuing over the next three years, MUSE will be adding a significant number of back issues from other publishers. Through a cost-sharing arrangement with the participating titles, MUSE is able to make the back issue content available without an increase in cost to subscribers.
During the second half of 2010, MUSE expects to launch back issues for these titles:
Biography (full run)
English Literature in Transition, 1880-1920
Ethics and the Environment
The Henry James Review (full run)
Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved (full run)
Journal of Modern Greek Studies (full run)
Journal of Women's History (full run)
Legacy (full run)
L'esprit Createur
Race/Ethnicity (full run)
Rhetoric and Public Affairs (full run)
Studies in Eighteenth Century Culture
Theatre Topics (full run)
Back issues for more than 50 other titles are expected to launch in the subsequent three years (2011-2013), with batches of back issue content released up to three times per year, grouped by subjects. Over half will result in full runs for the journal being available in MUSE. Any MUSE journal for which archival content is not already available in JSTOR may participate in the back issue program at the publisher’s choice. Each title’s back issues will be accessible by any subscriber to a collection that includes the title.
Additional announcements regarding new MUSE titles and publishers will be made in the coming months, and complete details, including pricing information, will be available on the MUSE web site by mid-July. Specific information regarding 2010 institutional renewals will be distributed to current subscribers and consortium affiliates in July and August; libraries that subscribe via a consortial arrangement should inquire about renewal options with their consortium offices. Questions regarding MUSE's 2010 journal collections and subscription offerings may be directed to muse@press.jhu.edu.

Western American Literature
Western American Literature is a refereed journal published quarterly by the Western Literature Association and Utah State University. Devoted to groundbreaking critical essays on the literature, culture, landscape, and art of the American West, the journal publishes New Western and postwestern literary criticism on such contemporary western writers as Ishmael Reed, Louis Owens, Sandra Cisneros, Cormac McCarthy, Rudolfo Anaya, Sherman Alexie, and Linda Hogan, as well as on traditional western writers such as Mary Austin, Gary Snyder, Mark Twain, Willa Cather, and others. Western American Literature also publishes cultural criticism: recent essays explore representations of the city (Mike Davis as “nature writer” in LA, “Reno-vation” in Nevada, James Ellroy and the “Black Dahlia” murder case); the Lone Ranger radio show; California “orientalism”; postcolonial readings of Asian American poets; and “The Role of Place in Mexican American Culture.” Having
published some of the earliest essays in ecocriticism, Western American Literature continues an active leadership role in the field. We also welcome essays that incorporate personal narrative into cultural analysis. The journal is also unique in its exploration of the intersection of western American literature and art through the use of many images in each issue.
While Western American Literature’s audience is primarily academic, general readers interested in the western American culture will find it accessible and informative.

Black Women, Gender & Families
Black Women, Gender & Families analyzes, develops, and furthers Black Women's Studies paradigms. Change in Titles from Liverpool University Press Joining MUSE in 2009
Liverpool University Press (LUP) is a recent addition to Project MUSE's list of participating publishers, signing up to contribute content from six titles to the MUSE online journal collections beginning in 2009. For business reasons, LUP has made changes to the list of journals which will be participating in MUSE. International Development Planning Review and Town Planning Review, both previously announced as joining MUSE in 2009, will not be contributing content to MUSE. Two other journals from LUP will instead begin contributing content in 2009: Music Sound and the Moving Image, and Science Fiction, Film and Television. Coverage for both of these titles in MUSE will begin with Volume 1, Issue 1. Content from both titles should appear online shortly.
Four other titles from LUP, previously announced as joining MUSE in 2009, will be contributing content as planned: The Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, The Byron Journal, Romani Studies, and the Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies. Two of these titles, The Bulletin of Hispanic Studies and Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies, have already launched their first issues online in MUSE.
Project MUSE has been a successful online publisher for nearly 15 years through the voluntary participation of our publishers and content providers. MUSE currently offers online access to journals from some 100 not-for-profit publishers, of which 60% have contributed current content for five or more years. A dozen major university presses have been participating continuously in MUSE since titles from publishers other than the Johns Hopkins University Press were first welcomed in 2000. For a significant number of university presses and scholarly societies, MUSE is the sole source for current electronic content from some or all of their titles.
Project MUSE is a unique collaboration between libraries and publishers, providing 100% full-text, affordable and user-friendly online access to a comprehensive selection of prestigious humanities and social sciences journals. MUSE's online journal collections support a diverse array of research needs at academic, special, school, and public libraries worldwide. MUSE currently provides full-text access to content from over 400 titles. MUSE began in 1993 as a pioneering joint project of the Johns Hopkins University Press and the Milton S. Eisenhower Library (MSEL) at JHU. Grants from the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities allowed MUSE to go live with JHU Press journals in 1995. Journals from other publishers were first incorporated in 2000, with additional publishers joining in each subsequent year. MUSE remains a not-for-profit collaboration between the participating publishers and MSEL, with the goal of disseminating quality scholarship via a sustainable model that meets the needs of both libraries and publishers.

Le Mouvement Social addresses recent developments in social history. The journal's initial focus on the history of collective movements and professional organizations has since been broadened to include other subfields within social history and beyond: the history of labor and the economy; the social history of politics, public policies and the state; cultural history and the history of representations; the history of gender relations, immigration and social mobility. The journal covers the contemporary period broadly defined, from the first years of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first. The journal's objective is to promote a pluralist social history, located at the intersection with sociology, economics, ethnography, anthropology, demography, political science and legal studies. Fostering interdisciplinary dialogue is one of its core missions. We welcome article submissions dealing with all geographical and cultural fields. Keeping with recent
historiographical developments, Le Mouvement Social encourages comparative studies as well as studies varying the scale of observation between the local and the global. Project MUSE News: New Discovery Feature in MUSE
Project MUSE is pleased to announce the addition of a new search feature that quickly connects users to more articles by an author. Look for the new 'More By' feature on each article. The 'More By' feature appears for each author listed as contributing to the article. Users can simply click on the linked author name to find additional articles in MUSE by the author.
In addition to providing quick access to more MUSE articles by the author, MUSE expanded the search to include links to more works by the author in Google Scholar and OCLC WorldCat. Google Scholar indexes peer-reviewed articles, books, theses, papers and abstracts from a wide variety of sources across many disciplines. Linking to the author's works in WorldCat using the 'Find in a library' link adds depth to a user's research, as the WorldCat record provides information about access to all formats of the author's work. WorldCat allows users to search the collections of libraries in their communities, as well as many others around the world, for both physical items and digital content.
The 'More By' this author feature in MUSE continues MUSE's efforts to provide users with tools to enhance their research and discovery.

Devoted to Hispanomedievalism in its broadest sense, La corónica also welcomes scholarship that transcends the linguistic and/or cultural borders of Spanish and explores the interconnectedness of those languages and cultures that coexisted in medieval Iberia. In addition to articles, La corónica features book reviews, reports, discussion forums, professional notices, and special thematic issues.

Subject: Project MUSE News: MUSE Releases First Vodcast
Project MUSE invites users to view our latest research tool: a vodcast. The vodcast, "Research MUSEings Vodcasts: Discovering Linked Subject Headings," is a quick tutorial about the benefits of using MUSE's linked subject headings in your research.
A vodcast is a video podcast. The MUSE vodcast is a tool for both users and librarians and runs just over three minutes in length. Users can learn, on their own, what subject headings are, where to find them in MUSE, and how they help locate articles specific to a research topic. Librarians may find the vodcast useful as a supplement to instruction classes. The vodcast is a lighthearted approach to demystifying the notion of Library of Congress Subject Headings as they appear in MUSE.
On the MUSE website, find the link for the vodcast in the Training Materials section under the Tools & Resources and Librarians tabs, http://muse.jhu.edu/about/resources/vodcasts.html.
We hope you find the vodcast a helpful tool for conducting research in MUSE journals. Questions about the vodcast may be directed to MUSE Customer Service at muse@press.jhu.edu
