Join us for the latest news about Project MUSE, and receive a distinctive mug for sipping your Seattle java.
Please join Project MUSE on Saturday, January 20, at our annual User Group Meeting during the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. Enjoy coffee in your own special commemorative mug while you learn about the latest developments in MUSE content, functionality, subscription options, and linking arrangements. Prospective as well as current MUSE subscribers are encouraged to attend.
MUSE continues to expand its offerings of quality full-text journals in the humanities and social sciences, with 19 new titles from 9 new and currently participating publishers confirmed for 2007. In addition to the new titles, we’ll be reviewing the new functionality introduced over the past year that is designed to provide wider access to MUSE content, making it easy for students and researchers to find articles in MUSE that are appropriate to their research.
We’ll also be discussing our new outreach initiatives and the many resources available to help librarians promote and manage their MUSE subscriptions. Most importantly, we'll be available to answer your questions about Project MUSE.
Details of the User Group Meeting:
Saturday, January 20, 2007
8:00 am - 9:00 am
Hilton Seattle – the Leeward Room
1301 6th Avenue
We'll begin our brief presentation at 8:00 sharp and leave ample time for questions and discussion to follow. A light breakfast will be available.
RSVP's for the meeting are appreciated to assist us with our planning. Libraries are welcome to send more than one representative. Replies may be directed to ko@press.jhu.edu. Please note the number of representatives you expect to have attending from your institution.
Project MUSE will also have an exhibit booth at the Midwinter Meeting, #2143. If you are not able to make it to the meeting, or have a question you would like to discuss in greater depth with a MUSE representative, please stop by anytime!
Thank you for your continued support of Project MUSE! We hope to see you in Seattle.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Project MUSE OAI Compatible
Project MUSE is pleased to announce that MUSE data now can be accessed through OAI, Open Archives Initiative. By launching this capability, MUSE subscribers gain flexibility with the increased number of channels by which to access MUSE articles.
MUSE is a Repository
The purpose of OAI is to facilitate the exchange of metadata between various institutions and database providers with a goal of increasing the availability of scholarly communication. It allows an institution to gather metadata from database providers. OAI is designed to work between a Harvester and a Repository. A harvester is a client application that is operated by a service provider, such as an institution, as a means of collecting metadata from repositories. A repository is a network accessible server that is managed by a data provider, such as MUSE, to expose metadata to harvesters.
As a repository, MUSE will receive HTTP requests from harvesters and respond by generating and serving XML documents. The data in these documents may contain the actual article metadata or it may be more general information that would then lead to further, more specific queries on the part of the harvester. This allows for a controlled crawl of the metadata. The essence of OAI is the exchange of the data; what a harvester does with MUSE metadata once they gather it is not part of OAI.
There are only 6 OAI commands:
- Identify - Tells what version MUSE supports (2.0)
- List Metadata Formats - Shows all formats that MUSE supports (Dublin Core)
- List Sets - Gives listing of all journals in MUSE, which allows for subsequent crawling of specific titles.
- List Identifiers - Finds articles pertinent to the request (which can be filtered by date or journal) but retrieves only the identifier, not the full metadata.
- List Records - Same as List Identifiers but returns full metadata records. Can result in a very large document to be served to the harvester.
- Get Record - Same as List Records but requires an article identifier and returns only that one matching article's metadata.
The OAI functionality in MUSE is still in the beta phase and we encourage subscribers to contact us with feedback about the helpfulness of this technology in searching and retrieving articles in MUSE. Feedback may be sent to the MUSE Customer Support desk at muse@muse.jhu.edu.

MARY ROSE MUCCIE NAMED DIRECTOR, PROJECT MUSE®
BALTIMORE (October 23, 2006) - The Johns Hopkins University Press is pleased to announce the appointment of Mary Rose Muccie as the new Director, Project MUSE®. Muccie will take the helm of the Press' pioneering online scholarly journal publishing venture beginning December 4, 2006.
"Project MUSE is proud to provide a fair and sustainable model for electronic journal publishing that meets the needs of both libraries and not-for-profit scholarly publishers," said Kathleen Keane, director of The Johns Hopkins University Press. "We are delighted to have an experienced leader like Mary Rose in place to steer MUSE's future developments and cultivate its full potential as a powerful tool for scholarly research and communication."
Most recently, Muccie held the position of Publisher with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), where she was responsible for all aspects of the society's book, journal, and electronic publishing activities. Among her accomplishments during her thirteen-year tenure with SIAM, Muccie counts the development of Locus, the society's complete journal archive digitization project, the successful negotiation of licenses for SIAM's online journal offerings with several major library consortia, and the launch of notable new journal titles including the SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, an electronic-only title with an accompanying open-access web portal. Muccie also chaired SIAM's Library Advisory Committee and oversaw the society's reference and textbook publishing efforts, including e-book activities.
Prior to joining SIAM, Muccie held editorial and production positions with the J.B. Lippincott Company and the Philadelphia Bar Association. She is an active member of the North American Serials Interest Group, Special Libraries Association, and Society for Scholarly Publishing. Muccie earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pennsylvania.
"I'm thrilled to be joining Project MUSE," said Muccie, "I look forward to engaging in an ongoing dialogue with MUSE participating publishers and the scholarly community, and to working with the MUSE staff to continue to provide an equitable and reliable model for online journal publishing in the humanities and social sciences."
Project MUSE®, Scholarly Journals Online, provides online access via institutional subscription to the current full text of over 330 peer-reviewed scholarly periodicals. Managed by the Johns Hopkins University Press, in collaboration with the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University and the participating publishers, MUSE offers titles from numerous university presses and not-for-profit publishers in the humanities, the social sciences and the arts. The Project has been hailed for its library-friendly licensing and usage policies and user-friendly interface. Several affordable subscription options are available, with discounts offered to certain categories of libraries and for consortial purchases. For more information on MUSE, visit http://muse.jhu.edu.

STUDIES IN WORLD CHRISTIANITY DEBUTS IN PROJECT MUSE
***From the Edinburgh University Press:
Studies in World Christianity
Christianity is becoming a truly world religion, rather than a European/Western religion whose forms have been imposed on other cultures of the world. As a consequence, new, incultured forms of Christianity are emerging, and these are being analysed, described, and argued for and against by Christians and other students of religion in each culture. The result is new developments in theology, Scripture studies, church history, morality and religious studies; from all of which there is much to be learned, especially in the West. And yet activists in one culture often do not know what is being done in another culture. Indeed, exponents of one of the disciplinary areas above often do not know what is developing in this way in a cognate area. Hence the need for a truly intercultural, interdisciplinary journal. It is this need that Studies in World Christianity is designed to meet, and does so with increasing and acknowledged success.

Canadian Journal of Women and the Law
Launched in 1985, the Canadian Journal of Women and the Law/Revue Femmes et Droit is the only Canadian periodical devoted entirely to the publication and dissemination of multi-disciplinary scholarship in the expanding field of women's legal studies. The CJWL is incorporated as a non-profit organization with charitable status. The CJWL's readership includes lawyers, judges, law students, academics, government officials and others interested in women's equality. The CJWL's mandate is to provide an outlet for those wishing to explore the impact of law on women's social, economic and legal status, and on the general conditions of their lives.
The Journal promotes the expansion of women's legal scholarship into new areas of research and study, and it aims to increase the volume and improve the accessibility of legal scholarship by Canadian women, on specifically Canadian topics. Finally, the CJWL seeks to provide an important tool for activists, academics and others engaged in research and law reform efforts on behalf of women.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Project MUSE® Announces New Titles, New Publishers, and 2007 Subscription Prices
Project MUSE® is pleased to announce that seventeen new journals and seven new publishers are confirmed to date for inclusion in its online collections of humanities and social science journals for 2007. Among the new titles are several from the Texas Tech University Press, which is new to Project MUSE. MUSE is delighted to be adding Texas Tech along with the other new participating publishers to its list of over 60 not-for-profit presses whose journals have been selected for the collections. Project MUSE 2007 pricing is also now available, and may be accessed from the 2007 Subscription Information overview at http://muse.jhu.edu/about/subscriptions/subscriptions_2007.html.
MUSE continues to offer a tiered, affordable pricing model for its six collections, allowing libraries of all sizes and missions the opportunity to access the collection that best fits each institution’s needs and budget. The list price for the 2007 MUSE Premium Collection is $27,500, representing a discount of more than 15% off the actual value of print subscriptions to the nearly 350 titles included. MUSE collections offer superior value with complete full-text content, no embargoes, high quality peer-reviewed titles, archival rights to all subscribed material, library-friendly usage policies, and access to selected back-files (up to 10 years or more) at no additional charge.
Complete details on 2007 North American academic library pricing are available at http://muse.jhu.edu/about/subscriptions/pricing_academic_2007.html. MUSE offers special pricing for school and special libraries; for further details on this and for international pricing information, please see our Subscriptions page at http://muse.jhu.edu/about/subscriptions/subscriptions_2007.html. All MUSE subscriptions operate on a calendar year subscription term and expire on December 31.
New Titles Added to Collections
The Premium Collection will continue to offer libraries the most comprehensive collection of online arts and humanities content. All seventeen new journals from new and participating publishers will be included in the Premium Collection. (Please see the complete list of new titles at the end of this announcement.) Selected new titles will also be added to three of MUSE's existing collections: Standard Collection, Arts and Humanities Collection, and Social Sciences Collection. In addition, selected current titles will be added to the Basic Research Collection, the Basic Undergraduate Collection, and the Social Sciences Collection.
Comparative Drama, James Joyce Quarterly, and Tulsa Studies in Women’s Literature will be joining the MUSE Standard Collection. Journals are chosen for the MUSE Basic Research and Basic Undergraduate collections based on a number of selective criteria, and current MUSE titles are re-evaluated annually using these guidelines. Journals now meeting the selection criteria may “graduate” into the applicable Basic collection(s). In 2007, MUSE will enhance the Basic Research Collection with several current titles: Asian Perspectives, Journal of Narrative Theory, Mediterranean Quarterly, and Southeastern Geographer. The Basic Undergraduate Collection will gain American Annals of the Deaf, Asian Perspectives, Journal of Folklore Research, Leonardo Music Journal, Nineteenth Century French Studies and positions: east asia cultures critique. Titles new to MUSE in 2007 will also be added to the Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences collections as appropriate based upon their subject matter. Please see the MUSE web site for complete 2007 title lists for all six collections.

Project MUSE is very pleased to announce the implementation of RSS feeds for all journals in MUSE. The RSS feed is an alert tool that provides users with instant notification about news, updates and additions to titles within the MUSE collection. The RSS feeds complement our e-mail journal alert service. Both offer students, librarians, researchers and faculty valuable tools for staying current with information about their favorite titles from the over 300 journals in the MUSE collection. The new RSS feed for Latest Issues enables users to easily survey the contents of the four most recent issues of a journal by linking to the corresponding Tables of Contents. MUSE subscribers have direct access to the full text articles from the RSS feeds. Information about subscribing to the feeds is found at the Project MUSE RSS Syndication page (http://feeds.muse.jhu.edu). Please visit this page often, as additional feeds will be added soon.
There are many websites for learning about RSS feeds and RSS Readers. While MUSE does not endorse one site or product over another, we recognize that those unfamiliar with the technology and terminology may find some introductory information helpful. The following link provides a description of RSS feeds and why they have become a popular method for information gathering. The link also provides descriptions of and links to some of the better-known RSS Readers.

The Comparatist
The Comparatist is a sponsored journal of the Southern Comparative
Literature Association. It has appeared in print annually since 1977
and is currently sponsored by North Carolina State University. The
Comparatist has traditionally published comparative work involving
literary and cultural movements, literature and the arts, relations
between European and non-European literatures, and inter-American
literary exchanges. More recently the journal has also focused on the
third world, Afro-Caribbean, and Central European literary phenomena.
Each issue features eight to ten articles clustered around major
comparative-thematic topics, such as “Theoretical Dialogues,” “Post-
Colonial Perspectives,” “Comparative Poetics,” or “Eastern-Western
Relationships”. A substantial review section evaluates important
theoretical and practical concerns involving cross-cultural study. As
a forum for literary comparatists, the journal encourages a
