PROJECT MUSE ANNOUNCES PRICE AND TITLE DETAILS FOR NEW PREMIUM
COLLECTION
Project MUSE is pleased to announce details for its new Premium
Collection of online scholarly journals, available for subscription
beginning in 2006. The list price for the Premium Collection is
$24,500, with over forty new journals confirmed for inclusion. A
complete list of new titles appears near the end of this announcement.
Libraries that choose the Premium Collection provide their users with
expanded coverage of high-quality full-text, peer-reviewed journals in
the humanities and social sciences in a common interface. New and
currently participating not-for-profit publishers benefit from a
sustainable, stable revenue model for worldwide dissemination of their
content.
An overwhelming number of titles applying for inclusion in the MUSE
online journal collections for 2006, combined with a commitment to cap
annual price increases for current collections at six percent through
2007, resulted in the development of the new Premium Collection. This
new option incorporates all the new titles selected, and provides an
option for libraries that have the need and the funding to acquire a
more expansive collection of refereed titles in the humanities and
social sciences.
MUSE’s new Premium Collection and the newly re-named Standard
Collection (formerly the Full Collection) offer libraries the best of
both worlds. Libraries seeking the most comprehensive collection of
online arts and humanities content can choose the Premium option, while
subscribers needing a stable, core collection with predictable pricing
will find that in the Standard.
For domestic academic subscribers, MUSE’s new Premium Collection will
use the Tier and Quartile pricing system introduced in 2005. This
system places each institution on a grid based upon its Carnegie
Classification and full-text usage relative to other subscribers in the
same Tier. The 2006 pricing grid for the Premium Collection may be
viewed online at
http://muse.jhu.edu/about/subscriptions/
pricing_academic_2006.html#premium. Prospective international or
special library customers should contact MUSE’s sales office for

on our web site, and may be accessed from the 2006 Subscription Plans
and Pricing overview at
http://muse.jhu.edu/about/subscriptions/subscriptions06.html.
As announced at the ALA Annual Conference in June, Project MUSE is
introducing a new collection in 2006, the Premium Collection. (Please
see http://muse.jhu.edu/about/muse/ala_press_release_2005.html for
details.) With many new journals seeking to join MUSE, this collection
allows MUSE to grow while still keeping the commitment we made in 2005
to limit price increases on current collections to no more than 6%. The
Premium Collection is expected to offer subscribers content from well
over 30 new journal titles, in addition to all current MUSE content,
and have a list price of less than $25,000. As negotiations with new
publishers are still being finalized, we will not be able to announce
final pricing for the Premium Collection until September 1. Please
check the web site periodically for updates to prices and titles for
this collection.
Concurrently, we are changing the name of the current “Full Collection”
to the “Standard Collection.” For 2006, the Standard Collection
includes all content in the Full Collection, as well as a selectively
chosen set of eight new titles. Selected titles will also be added to
the Arts and Humanities Collection and Social Sciences Collection.
Please see the individual collection web pages for complete details on
title changes to current MUSE collections.
As introduced in 2005, MUSE pricing is now determined under a model
that assigns to each subscriber a pricing tier and usage quartile.
Tiers are based upon the institution’s Carnegie classification, and
should not typically change from year to year. Usage quartiles are
determined by ranking the institutions within each tier by their actual
full-text article usage in the previous subscription term (in this
case, the 2004 subscription year), and dividing into quartiles.
Subscribers that do not yet have a complete year's worth of usage data
are placed in the first quartile. Quartiles may change from year to
year. Any institution which has experience a quartile change from the
last subscription term has already been individually notified of that
change by email. Project MUSE consortium partners have also received
details regarding renewal pricing for 2006.
Project MUSE subscriptions operate on a calendar year term and all
subscriptions expire on December 31. Questions regarding Project MUSE
renewals and orders for 2006 may be directed to our Subscription
Services department at muse@muse.jhu.edu.

PROJECT MUSE INTRODUCES UPDATED INSTITUTIONAL LICENSE FOR 2006
As announced during our User Group meeting at the recent ALA Annual
Conference, Project MUSE® is introducing an updated and streamlined
Institutional Licensing Agreement for the MUSE online journal
collections. The new license will be effective January 1st, 2006. We
have posted the draft version of the new license for our subscribers'
review as they make their purchasing decisions for the coming year. The
text of the new license can be viewed here:
http://muse.jhu.edu/about/muse/terms_new06.html
Also available on the web site is a presentation from the ALA meeting
that summarizes the key changes and the reasons a revised license was
necessary.
Project MUSE® continues to support fair use and the rights of
subscribers. The new Agreement combines the current "Terms and
Conditions" and "Rights and Responsibilities" into one document, making
it easier for subscribers to locate the information in one place. The
new Agreement also features modified technical language to ensure
integrity of usage and protect against unauthorized use of content.
Because MUSE now uses usage data for subscriber pricing, it is
imperative that our servers are protected from unauthorized use.
For the most part, subscribers who purchase MUSE via a consortium
arrangement will not need to sign a new individual license. Upon
renewal, our consortium partners will be sent the updated license,
including additional components related to consortium discounts and
purchasing requirements, to sign on behalf of their members. Consortia
will be responsible for ensuring that all participating members are
aware of MUSE¹s new license terms. Institutions that purchase MUSE
directly will receive information on completing the new license at the
time of renewal.
This revised Agreement reflects our commitment to providing access to
high-quallity content through terms that meet the needs of libraries,
publishers, and users. Libraries are encouraged to contact us at
muse@muse.jhu.edu with any questions related to the new license.
As a reminder, all MUSE subscriptions operate on a calendar year
subscription term and expire on December 31. Pricing and subscription
details for 2006 will be posted on the MUSE web site by August 1.

PROJECT MUSE® ANNOUNCES NEW TITLES, NEW PUBLISHER
ALA ANNUAL CONFERENCE, CHICAGO (June 25, 2005) – Project MUSE® is pleased
to announce more than 20 new journals are confirmed to date for inclusion
in its online journal collections for 2006. Among the new titles are
several from the Edinburgh University Press, which is new to Project MUSE.
MUSE is excited to be adding Edinburgh to its list of 60 not-for-profit
presses whose journals have been selected for the collections.
MUSE is introducing a new online journal collection for 2006, the Premium

Selected titles will also be added to three of MUSE’s existing
collections: Standard Collection (formerly known as the Full Collection),
Arts and Humanities Collection, and Social Sciences Collection.
“Edinburgh University Press has a very strong list of titles in key
subject areas for MUSE. The interest shown by publishers like Edinburgh
motivated us to seek an option for growth that would meet the needs of
both publishers and library subscribers alike,” said Aileen McHugh,
Director of Electronic Publishing for Project MUSE. “We anticipate that
the new Premium Collection will provide wider dissemination for high
quality scholarship and more choices for libraries.”
Journals added to the new Premium Collection will complement the existing
titles and enhance MUSE offerings in core areas of the arts, humanities
and social sciences. The final title list for the collection will be
announced in September 2005. Currently the confirmed titles include, but

PROJECT MUSE® ANNOUNCES NEW COLLECTION, NEW NAMES AND 2006 SUBSCRIPTION
PRICES
“Premium Collection” Offers New Journals, New Publishers
ALA ANNUAL CONFERENCE, CHICAGO (June 25, 2005) – In a reflection of its
commitment to serving the needs of libraries, scholars, and not-for-profit
publishers, Project MUSE® announced Saturday the addition of a sixth
journal collection to its already extensive roster of quality, online
journal collections. The new Premium Collection has been developed with
the input of library customers to meet several needs of the scholarly
community.
Libraries that choose the Premium Collection provide their users with
expanded coverage of high-quality full text, peer reviewed journals in the
humanities and social sciences in a common interface. New and existing
not-for-profit publishers benefit from a sustainable, stable revenue model
for worldwide dissemination of their content. Project MUSE also announced
its preliminary 2006 subscription prices, which reflect the pricing
commitment set forth in its new pricing model introduced in 2005.
“Just as the new pricing model addressed the needs of both subscribers and
publishers, so too does the new Premium Collection,” said Aileen McHugh,
Director of Electronic Publishing at Project MUSE. “The new collection
enables MUSE subscribers to access the most current scholarly content in
the areas of arts, humanities and social sciences, and in turn provides a
new avenue for publishers to have their content read far and wide.”
Nearly 100 journals from current and prospective publishers applied for
inclusion in the MUSE collections for 2006. While this was a welcome
confirmation of MUSE’s success as a platform for respected journals, this
interest left MUSE with a dilemma – how to incorporate additional high
quality content while honoring its commitment to cap annual price
increases for current collections at six percent through 2007. After
extensive consultation with library subscribers and publishers in
meetings, open discussions, and focus groups at the ALA Midwinter Meeting
and ACRL conference, MUSE developed the Premium Collection, a new option
that would incorporate all the new titles selected, and provide an option
for libraries that have the need and the funding to acquire a more
expansive collection of refereed titles in the humanities and social
sciences.
Project MUSE’s current Full Collection will be re-named the Standard
Collection beginning in 2006. The Standard Collection will include all
titles currently in the Full Collection, with a limited number of
additional journals added in 2006. In line with Project MUSE’s commitment
to a six percent cap on annual price increases through 2007 for existing
collections, the 2006 list price for the Standard Collection will be
$20,100.
The new Premium Collection is still being developed and contract
negotiations are in progress with new publishers and new journals. It is
expected that the Premium Collection will offer more than 25 additional
journals from both current and new publishers in MUSE’s core areas of the
arts, humanities and social sciences with a 2006 list price of less than
$25,000. Final pricing and titles for the Premium Collection will be
announced by September 2005. (See separate release on new titles confirmed
to date.)
“MUSE’s new Premium Collection and the newly-named Standard Collection
offer libraries the best of both worlds,” said Melanie Schaffner,
Marketing and Sales Manager for Project MUSE. “Libraries seeking the most
comprehensive collection of online arts and humanities content can choose
the Premium option, while subscribers needing a stable, core collection
with predictable pricing will find that in the Standard.”
List prices for Project MUSE’s other four collections for 2006 are as
follows:
Basic Research: $16,900
Basic Undergraduate: $10,000
Arts & Humanities: $18,000
Social Sciences: $13,200
The Basic Research Collection, Arts and Humanities Collection, and Social
Sciences Collection will increase by six percent, in line with MUSE’s
commitment to cap price increases. The price for the Basic Undergraduate
collection will not increase in 2006.
For domestic academic subscribers, MUSE will continue to utilize the Tier
and Quartile pricing system introduced in 2005. This system places each
institution on a grid based upon its Carnegie Classification and full-text
usage relative to other subscribers in the same Tier. Subscribers will be
notified of any changes in their Tier/Quartile classification by August 1,
2005.
MUSE’s 2006 pricing for international and special libraries will be
communicated directly to subscribers by August 1, 2005. Prospective
international or special library customers should contact MUSE’s sales
office for pricing information. School libraries will continue to be able
to take advantage of MUSE’s special offer of access to the Standard
Collection for only $1,000 annually.
Further details on 2006 subscription options will be posted on MUSE’s site
http://muse.jhu.edu during July 2005, with subscribers notified by email
as information becomes available. Final title lists for the five existing
collections are expected by August 1, 2005, and the final list for the
Premium Collection is expected by September 2005. Selected titles will
also be added to the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences collections.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Muse Indexed in Google
PROJECT MUSE COLLABORATES WITH GOOGLE TO INDEX JOURNAL CONTENT
Project MUSE subscribers can now use Google or Google Scholar to locate
full text of journals hosted by MUSE
Project MUSE has collaborated with Google Inc., to enable researchers
and students to use the Google web site and its Google Scholar
interface to explore the Project MUSE web site for relevant scholarly
research information.
Individuals at a MUSE subscribing institution can now use the familiar
interface of Google at www.google.com or scholar.google.com to search
the full-text content from any of the more than 270 scholarly journals
that MUSE currently hosts. Articles can be viewed in HTML or PDF.
“Project MUSE is excited to work with Google to provide our users with
yet another easy, user-friendly gateway to find appropriate full-text
articles on MUSE,” said Aileen McHugh, Project MUSE Director of
Electronic Publishing. “We believe that this new Google capability will
help subscribers increase their usage of MUSE content, enhancing its
value and usefulness as a research tool at libraries.”
Currently, MUSE subscribers can search and browse the collection’s
numerous journals through the subscribing library’s catalog, many
traditional abstracting and indexing databases, links from related
products and MUSE’s own search engine. Google is the first well-known
Internet search engine to index scholarly content online.
“Working with Google is also beneficial to publishers who participate
in MUSE as content from their journals is more visible to researchers
and students,” said Wendy Queen, Electronic Projects Manager at Project
MUSE. “Since publishers aim to distribute scholarly information as

Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies
The Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies is the official
publication of the Group for Early Modern Cultural Studies and
regularly publishes articles and reviews on cultural history from the
late fifteenth to the late nineteenth centuries. It provides a venue
for exchange between scholars in such traditionally diverse fields as
sociology and anthropology; history, economics, and political science;
philology and literary criticism; art history and iconology; and
African, American, European, and Asian studies. By extending its
boundaries in the direction of cultural theory, gender studies,
colonial and postcolonial studies, and postmodernism, JEMCS challenges
the boundaries that separate such traditional scholarly disciplines
while also bringing those disciplines into contact with each other

Early Music
Early Music is a stimulating and richly illustrated journal, and is
unrivalled in its field. Founded in 1973, it remains the journal for
anyone interested in early music and how it is being interpreted today.
Contributions from scholars and performers on international standing
explore every aspect of earlier musical repertoires, present vital new
evidence for our understanding of the music of the past, and tackle
controversial issues of performance practice.
Each issue is beautifully illustrated and contains a wide range of
articles on performance practice, iconography, sources, instruments and
many other aspects of the historical context for a given work or
repertory. Some issues are dedicated to a particular theme to mark the
anniversary of a composer or to explore an otherwise uncharted

introduce some new journal collection options developed specifically
for research and undergraduate libraries. With extensive input from
librarians, MUSE also recently announced a new pricing model designed
to provide greater fairness, flexibility, and predictability for
subscribers, and to open up new opportunities for smaller colleges and
universities, special libraries, and international libraries to benefit
from the wealth of resources MUSE offers.
We’ll also be discussing new outreach initiatives and the many
resources available to help librarians promote and manage their MUSE
subscriptions, demonstrating some new features developed to enhance
usability of Muse, and updating you on our partnerships and linking
arrangements with third party services. Most importantly, we'll be
available to answer your questions about Project MUSE.
