the interactions between science and Judaism throughout history.
Science is conceived broadly and includes the social sciences and the
humanities. Likewise, the history of science is broadly construed

dimensions. Aleph also publishes studies on related subjects that allow
a comparative view, such as the place of science in other cultures. It
regularly includes full-length articles and brief communications, as

PROJECT MUSE USER GROUP BREAKFAST MEETING AT ALA
*Additional titles, new journal collections, a revised pricing model,
and enhanced outreach initiatives – Join us to find out all that’s new
with MUSE for 2005!*
Please join Project MUSE for breakfast in Boston on Saturday, January
15, at our annual User Group Meeting during the American Library
Association’s Midwinter Meeting. This past year has been one of growth
and change for MUSE, and we are excited to share all the latest news
for 2005. Prospective as well as current Muse subscribers are
encouraged to attend.
MUSE continues to expand our offerings of quality full-text journals in
the humanities and social sciences. Along with 26 new titles and 7 new
publisher participants confirmed for 2005, we are also pleased to
introduce some new journal collection options developed specifically
for research and undergraduate libraries. With extensive input from
librarians, MUSE also recently announced a new pricing model designed
to provide greater fairness, flexibility, and predictability for
subscribers, and to open up new opportunities for smaller colleges and
universities, special libraries, and international libraries to benefit
from the wealth of resources MUSE offers.
We’ll also be discussing new outreach initiatives and the many
resources available to help librarians promote and manage their MUSE
subscriptions, demonstrating some new features developed to enhance
usability of Muse, and updating you on our partnerships and linking
arrangements with third party services. Most importantly, we'll be
available to answer your questions about Project MUSE.
Details on the User Group Meeting:
Saturday, January 15, 2005
8:00 am - 9:00 am
Hilton Boston Back Bay - Belvidere Salon A
40 Dalton Street (adjacent to the Hynes Convention Center)
We'll begin our brief presentation at 8:00 sharp and leave ample time
for questions and discussion to follow. A light breakfast will be
available.
RSVP's for the meeting are appreciated to assist us with our planning.
Libraries are welcome to send more than one representative. Replies may
be directed to melanie@muse.jhu.edu. Please note the number of
representatives you expect to have attending from your institution.
Project MUSE will also have an exhibit booth at the Midwinter Meeting,
#302. If you are not able to make it to the meeting, or have a question
you would like to discuss in greater depth with a Muse representative,
please stop by anytime!
Thank you for your continued support of Project MUSE! We hope to see
you in Boston.

Subject: Muse Administrative List Update for Important Pricing Announcement
URGENT AND TIME-SENSITIVE: PROJECT MUSE PRICING ANNOUNCEMENT PENDING
Dear Colleague,
You receive announcements from this Project MUSE Administrative email
mailing list because you are either the administrative contact for your
institution's Muse subscription (designated at the time your
subscription was initiated or updated per a specific request since that
time), or you specifically requested at some point that you be added to
this list as an additional contact for your institution's subscription,
or you are the administrative contact for a consortium which licenses
Muse.
In about a week, Project MUSE will be making some very important
announcements regarding our 2005 subscription options, which will
reflect our new pricing model as announced at the recent ALA Annual
Conference and detailed in the most recent issue of the Muse News
newsletter (available online at http://muse.jhu.edu/about/muse/news/).
Our plan is to send a general pricing announcement to this list, and
to also send a personalized email notice to each current subscriber or
consortium detailing their options under the new model. These
personalized notices will be sent to the administrative contact for
each institution's subscription.
We want to ensure that this crucial pricing information is reaching the
most appropriate contact at each subscribing institution in a timely
manner. If you are no longer the most appropriate administrative
contact for your institution's Muse subscription, please help us update
our list prior to the pricing announcements. Please send the name,
email and phone number of the appropriate contact to muse@muse.jhu.edu
no later than Wednesday, July 28, so that we may update our files in
time to ensure that your institution's important pricing information
gets to those who need it.
Please note that while we may add additional contacts at subscribing
institutions to this general announcement list, our system allow only
ONE designated administrative contact per subscriber, and this is the
individual to whom the personalized price announcement will be sent.
Please help us ensure our records are up to date.
Please note also that in the case of centrally-funded consortium
licenses, the pricing details may be sent to the consortium office
rather than to the individual member institutions. If your subscription
to Muse is via a centrally-funded license, and you do not receive a
notice about your 2005 pricing, please contact your consortium office
for further details.
Finally, please be aware that Muse offers several ways to stay informed
about developments with our online journal collections. This
administrative list is used for a variety of announcements including
pricing and policy updates, enhancements to functionality, content
changes and updates, notices of scheduled maintenance and service
outages, invitations to user group meetings and other opportunities to
provide feedback or learn more about Muse, employment opportunities,
and other general Muse news. As noted, we must have at least one
designated administrative contact for each subscribing institution, who
is included on this list to ensure each subscriber receives these
important updates. We also offer a Journal Alert service allowing
customized subscriptions to alerts of all new titles and or all new
issues in Muse, as well as journal-specific alerts. Sign up for Journal
Alerts at http://muse.jhu.edu/cgi-bin/journal_alerts.cgi. Finally, our
"For Librarians" page includes a number of handy resources and tools
for subscribing libraries, as well as a link to our "What's New" page.
See http://muse.jhu.edu/about/librarians/.
Thank you for your assistance in keeping our records up to date, so
that we can ensure you always know the latest news from Project MUSE.
Sincerely,

Film & History: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Film and Television
Studies
Film & History has been in publication for over thirty (30) years and
is described in detail at its web site:
www.filmandhistory.org
This journal considers motion pictures under the following rubrics:
1. Films which interpret history;
2. Films which reflect history;
3. Films made to influence history.
We are interested in documentary as well as feature films. There is no
restriction concerning nationality; we welcome articles about the world
of media.
The journal contains many book reviews and film reviews each issue.
Subscribers are asked to participate by reviewing such texts for the
journal.
Each year, Film & History also produces a CD-ROM of articles and
out-of-print books for scholars in the form of a CD-ROM. Many
publishable articles which do not fit our topic of the year are given a
venue in this publication venture. The CD-ROMs also contain video and
audio materials--often entire radio shows about selected film and
history topics.
Please check the web site for more information, to include
announcements about our bi-ennial meetings. (The next meeting will be
in Dallas during early November, 2004; check details on the web site.

For those not able to attend the meeting, information about Project
MUSE's new pricing model will be posted online early in the following
week. A follow-up announcement will inform subscribers when this
information is available online.
Final prices and title lists for the 2005 Muse collections will be
announced by early August. Current Muse subscribers and consortium
partners will be contacted directly with details about the options
available to them for 2005. We appreciate the support and
understanding of our library customers as we strive to find a model
that accommodates the needs of both librarians and publishers.

PROJECT MUSE PROVIDES OPENURL-ENABLED LINKS TO JSTOR
Project MUSE recently released links to JSTOR articles from the back

ongoing effort to provide more options for subscribers, MUSE is
pleased to announce that libraries can now opt to set up links to

While a majority of MUSE subscribers participate in at least some of

Project MUSE is pleased to announce the release of article-level
links to the back issues of 25 journals common to both Muse and
JSTOR. Users can now select an option on the Muse Advanced Search
page to include JSTOR citation information (title, author, abstract)
in their searches. JSTOR results are clearly labeled and take the
user to a brief "intermediary page" alerting the user that the
article is on another site.
Muse plans to release OpenURLs for the links to JSTOR in June to
enable libraries with limited or no participation in JSTOR to point
their users to the appropriate resources.
The article-level links are part of a reciprocal linking agreement
between Muse and JSTOR. JSTOR also provides the ability to search
and browse the Muse issues for these same titles from the JSTOR
interface. The Muse/JSTOR linking project gives users the added
convenience of searching the full run, from Volume 1 to the current
issue, of these journals from either resource. For more information
and a list of journal titles included in the project so far, see
http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/librarian_resources/backissues.html.
There are currently over 40 titles common to both Muse and JSTOR, and
this number is expected to grow to over 50 in the near future.
Publishers of the journals included in the reciprocal linking project
agree to fill any "gaps" in coverage to ensure that the full digital
runs of the titles are available between Muse and JSTOR. Recently,
The Ohio State University Press and the Brookings Institution Press
agreed to participate in the linking project. Article-level links
between Muse and JSTOR for The Journal of Higher Education, Journal
of Money, Credit, and Banking, and Brookings Papers on Economic
Activity will be available in a future release.

POPULATION REVIEW
Population Review, a peer-reviewed journal of demography and population
studies published since 1957, welcomes original articles on all aspects
of human population problems, solutions, issues, trends and events as
they relate to the developing countries of the world in Asia, Africa
and Latin America. Population Review also accepts articles that examine
population topics in the developed world, particularly as they relate
to the developing world. Articles that are multidisciplinary in
orientation (incorporating theoretical concepts and perspectives from
anthropology, biology, ecology, economics, environmental science,
epidemiology, geography, history, mass communications, medicine,
political science, public health, psychology and sociology, among
others) are highly desired.
Population Review publishes original articles from distinguished,
internationally recognized scholars. On occasion articles from
relatively unknown, often younger contributors are given space in the
journal. In addition to featured articles, open editorials that focus
on contemporary population-related issues and events worldwide are
published along with brief research reports and announcements. Finally,
space is given to book reviews.

MUSE ADDS TWO TITLES, CANCELS PLANS FOR ONE
Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, Southeastern
Geographer Added; International Journal of Slavic Linguistics not

Project MUSE is pleased to announce that, in addition to the new 2004
titles previously announced, we will be offering two more full text
journals to our subscribers during the 2004 subscription term. These
titles were not included in the package pricing for 2004 but will be
available to subscribers to selected collections at no additional
charge. The two new titles are the Journal of Health Care for the
Poor and Underserved, and Southeastern Geographer.
The Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Undeserved, published by
the Johns Hopkins University Press and sponsored by Meharry Medical
College, joins Muse with the first issue of its fifteenth volume.
JHUP recently acquired the journal and has reduced its subscription
rates significantly. The journal has as its goal the dissemination of
information on the health of, and health care for, low income and
other medically underserved communities to health care practitioners,
policy makers, and community leaders who are in a position to effect
meaningful change. Issues dealt with include access to, quality of,
and cost of health care.
The University of North Carolina Press has recently taken on the
publishing of Southeastern Geographer, which will join Muse this
summer. The semi-annual journal is a publication of the Southeastern
Division of the Association of American Geographers. First published
in 1961, the journal includes research papers on all geographical
topics, but especially invites submissions that focus on the South.
The Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved launched its
first issue on Muse earlier this week. Full text of the title will be
available to all subscribers to the 2004 Full Collection, Social
Sciences Collection, and Johns Hopkins University Press Package.
Access to Southeastern Geographer will be included in the 2004 Full
Collection, Social Sciences Collection, and University of North
Carolina Press Package.
At the publisher's request, the International Journal of Slavic
Linguistics will not be included in Muse as previously announced. We
regret any inconvenience resulting from the deletion of this title
from the list of planned additions to Muse. Questions about this
title or its availability should be directed to the print edition
publisher, Slavica Publishers at Indiana University.

WEB SURVEY ON PROJECT MUSE PRICING MODELS, DEADLINE FRIDAY 2/13
Dear Muse Subscriber,
As ideas for a revised pricing model for Project MUSE begin to take
shape, we would appreciate your feedback via a web based survey on a
number of factors being considered. This process enables us to
consider a broad range of ideas and effectively identify your
preferred options
You are receiving this as the Project MUSE contact for your
institution. *Please share this email with your colleagues,
especially those in user services, who may also wish to participate.*
Completing the survey should take 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how
many comments you choose to make. You may work on the survey in
several sessions. It will save your place if you wish to exit and
return, provided no one else accesses the survey from the same
browser. Please enter the survey here:
http://www.informedstrategies.com/projectmuse
(If you encounter technical issues with the survey, please email the
survey administrator at maureen.romano@informedstrategies.com.)
We thank all of you who have already emailed comments, attended the
public hearing or a focus group or came to our booth at ALA in San
Diego, or participated in a telephone interview. Your reactions and
ideas have contributed to our evolving ideas. We encourage you to
participate in our survey as well.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Muse Launches COUNTER-Compliant Statistics
Muse Launches New COUNTER-Compliant Statistics Tool
Project MUSE has launched a new usage statistics tool in response to
the development of the COUNTER Code of Practice for online usage
statistics. We have taken this opportunity to make changes to the
back end of our system in order to ensure the improved delivery of
our usage statistics. The new statistics tool, which replaces our
former ICOLC-compliant tool, will launch on February 14, 2004.
Institutions will be able to view their 2004 usage statistics at the
new URL, http://stats.muse.jhu.edu.
With the new COUNTER-compliant tool, libraries will no longer need to
manually run their statistics for the time period they specify.
Instead, monthly statistics will be automatically loaded by the 14th
of the subsequent month and will be cumulative, so that year-to-date
totals will display at any point in the year. Authorized librarians
from subscribing institutions simply sign on with their login and
password to view their current statistics. (To request a login and
password, e-mail muse@muse.jhu.edu, being sure to include name,
title, and institutional affiliation.) The statistics will be
provided in Excel format so libraries can easily import data to their
master spreadsheets for comparison with other COUNTER-compliant
databases, or manipulate the data to suit their needs.
Though the new tool will begin with 2004 statistics, institutions can
still request that their 2003 and 2002 statistics be sent to them in
Excel format by e-mailing muse@muse.jhu.edu. Note that statistics
from prior to 2004 will be compiled according to the ICOLC-compliant
standards and will not be consistent with the new COUNTER-compliant
statistics.
Muse is currently COUNTER-compliant (Level I) and is moving towards
Level II COUNTER compliance. View the COUNTER Code of Practice
(http://www.projectcounter.org/) for more information about COUNTER
and levels of compliance.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Pricing Models Discussion Online
PROJECT MUSE HEARING ON PRICING MODELS CONTINUES ONLINE<br />
At the recent ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Diego, Project MUSE hosted
a Public Hearing to solicit customer and consortia executive feedback
to proposed new pricing models for 2005. We were very pleased with
both the size of the turnout and the useful suggestions. However, not
everyone who wished to attend the hearing was able to do so, and time
constraints limited the number of comments we could take on each
model. So, we have decided to extend the hearing into an online forum
where additional discussion of the models may occur.
Two sets of PowerPoint slides used at the hearing are available on
our web site at http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/pricing_forum.html.
The first presentation provides an overview of Project MUSE finances
and the relationships with our 40 participating publishers,
describing the need for a change in our current pricing strategy. The
second presentation was used to guide the discussion of proposed new
models by our consultants, October Ivins and Judy Luther. The web
site includes a discussion forum where you may leave additional
comments and feedback on the models currently under discussion.
Please keep in mind that the ideas presented in the PowerPoint
demonstration are meant as points for discussion, and no decisions
have yet been made about Muse pricing for 2005. We encourage your
comments to help us refine these ideas as we continue with our
pricing study.
Later in January we will also host a web-based survey to solicit
additional feedback. Our timetable for the new pricing models is to
conclude the web based survey by Feb. 6th and for the consultants to
submit their report by Feb. 27th. We will then review the
recommendations with our Advisory Board in March and at our meeting
of all participating publishers in April. We plan to announce the
new pricing during June, contingent on receiving final 2005 print
prices from our participating publishers by August.
Please feel free to comment now, or you may wait for the web-based survey.

REMINDER: PROJECT MUSE PUBLIC HEARING ON PRICING MODELS AT ALA <br />MIDWINTER MEETING
Dear Muse Subscriber,
We hope you enjoyed the holiday season and thank you for your
continued support as Project MUSE enters its ninth year! A few seats
are still available for our public hearing on proposed new pricing
models on Saturday, January 10, during the ALA Midwinter Meeting in
San Diego. In fall 2003, Project MUSE conducted an open bid process
and selected two consultants to assist us in developing new pricing
models for 2005 and reviewing them with our customers and
participating publishers. We are pleased to utilize the expertise of
October Ivins and Judy Luther, who are both librarians with extensive
serials backgrounds and experience with journal publishers.
Invitation to Public Hearing on Pricing Models, RSVP by Jan. 6th
We invite you to join your colleagues, our consultants, and us at the
hearing, where a continental breakfast will be provided. It will be
at the U.S. Grant Hotel (326 Broadway), Garden Room, from 8:00 to
9:00 am on Saturday, January 10th. If you plan to attend, RSVP to
melanie@muse.jhu.edu by Tuesday, January 6, 2004. For planning
purposes, please note the number of representatives you expect to
have attending from your institution.
Other Opportunities for Your Feedback
Also at ALA Midwinter, Aileen McHugh, Judy Luther or October Ivins
will be available to discuss your reactions to the pricing models in
the Project MUSE booth, number 1752. At least one of them will be
there according to this schedule:
Saturday, Jan. 10th 11:00 am -12:30 pm, 2:00-4:00 pm
Sunday, Jan. 11th 9:30 -11:30 am, 1:30-4:30 pm
Monday, Jan. 12th 9:30 -11:00 am, noon to 2:00 pm
The consultants will also conduct two focus groups at ALA (an
invitation to apply was sent separately). During January they will
conduct a web-based survey of Project MUSE subscribers and potential
subscribers on this topic.
Background
We would like to provide background information about the need for
new models and some factors that may be included in the models. If
you attended the ICOLC conference in September 2003, some of this
information will be familiar to you.
Project MUSE supports both librarians and nonprofit publishers by
delivering journals in electronic form as part of an affordable
package. Library discounts for MUSE are based on size and type of
library and consortia affiliation. This model worked during the
initial period of high growth, when the additional revenue was new
money for publishers and when consortia were less prevalent. However,
the deep discounts produced by this model are not sustainable long
term for the following reasons, among others:
*Print cancellations are accelerating and what was "additional"
revenue for publishers now falls short of the amounts lost to current
print cancellations.
*Some publishers that currently have titles with Project MUSE either
won't consider adding more high-quality titles, or they are
considering withdrawing their high-quality titles from the collection.
*Many publishers that don't currently have titles with Project MUSE
find the current model unappealing and untenable, and are therefore
hesitant to participate.
* As the number of titles in Project Muse expands, the price of the
full Muse package is growing beyond the budget of liberal arts
colleges and smaller university libraries.
*All of the publishers in Project MUSE are nonprofit, and they face
heavy competition for their journals from the for-profit publishers.
Possible New Models
We are exploring pricing models that can accommodate the needs of
both librarians and publishers. The first four factors are intended
to increase revenues, and the last three are intended to create
options for libraries.
1) Cap the volume purchasing discount at a lower level than the
current model or eliminate the double discount. (This double
discount is created when a library takes advantage of both a discount
based on their size or type and one from a consortium or a regional
network cooperative purchase.)
2) Expand the range of price levels, offering a less expensive
category for very small institutions and a more expensive category
for very large institutions.
3) Consider the JSTOR model of offering no discount beyond the
sliding scale based on size and type of institution.
4) Freeze the packages with the 2004 collections and offer new
titles for additional fees.
5) Offer discipline based packages.
6) Offer a cross-disciplinary or discipline-specific core list
of 150 leading journals, possibly based on those included in the H.W.
Wilson indexes.
7) Continue/refine a flex plan for consortia to be able to pick
the titles (100 plus) they want on an annual basis.
We look forward to discussing these and other options with you. As
previously noted, in addition to the hearing, our consultants will
conduct focus groups at ALA and a web-based survey in January to
solicit your feedback. You may also email us during this time with
additional comments/concerns.
We believe that this process enables us to consider a broad range of
options and effectively identify your preferred options. Thank you
in advance for your participation.
