PROJECT MUSE HOSTS TRAINING AND DISCUSSION SESSIONS AT ALA MIDWINTER

Go exploring with Project Muse librarians! Muse is hosting
training/discussion sessions for librarians at the ALA Midwinter
Meeting in San Diego. These sessions will give participants an
overview of Muse and a chance to ask questions and give feedback.
Muse is also looking for volunteers to participate in a series of
usability studies that will help us to continue to meet the needs of
our subscribers. These activities will take place in the Embassy
Suites Hotel.

This year, Project Muse is having a public hearing about proposed new
pricing models in lieu of its usual User Group meeting. But you can
still get an update on what's new at Muse by participating in one of
our training/discussion sessions. We will also be happy to answer
your questions and give you a demo of what's new on Muse at the
Project Muse booth, #178.

Training/Discussion Sessions
Project Muse is offering two different training/discussion sessions.
While one is more general and one is focused on Muse functionality,
feel free to bring any questions you might have to either session.
Lunch is provided, and participants will be entered in a raffle for a
$50 Amazon.com gift certificate.

---General Project Muse Overview
Saturday, January 10, 12-1:30 p.m. (Lunch Provided)

If you are new to Muse, want a refresher, or your institution is
considering subscribing to Muse, join us for an overview of Muse and
the resources provided for subscribing librarians. We will cover
features of the Muse site, including the search engine, linking
arrangements with other vendors, subject-based instructional guides,
and resources and tools, and our plans for a new COUNTER-compliant
statistics tool.

---Focus on Project Muse Functionality
Sunday, January 11, 12-1:30 (Lunch Provided)
Monday, January 12, 12-1:30 (Lunch Provided)

We will give a brief general overview of Muse's tools and resources
available for subscribing libraries, but will focus on the
functionality including the newest search engine enhancements. We
will also discuss the development of our new COUNTER-compliant usage
statistics tool and will get your feedback on some issues affecting
Muse. Feel free to bring your questions or suggestions for us!

Usability Studies
Muse seeks academic librarians who deal with electronic resources to
take part in a usability study. Usability study volunteers will
receive a $20 Amazon.com gift certificate. Light refreshments will be
served. Time slots available:

Saturday, January 10, 3:30-5 p.m.
Sunday, January 11, 10-11:30 a.m. OR 2:30-4 p.m.
Monday, January 12, 10-11:30 a.m. OR 2:30-4 p.m.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Hearing on Pricing Models at ALA

Dear Muse Subscriber,<br />
Thank you for your continued support of Project MUSE®. As you know,
we often host a User Group meeting during the ALA conferences on
Saturday morning. For the ALA Midwinter Meeting next month in San
Diego, we plan to use this time for a public hearing about proposed
new pricing models for 2005. This fall, Project MUSE conducted an
open bid process and selected two consultants to assist us in
developing new pricing models and reviewing them with our customers
and participating publishers. We are pleased to utilize the
expertise of October Ivins and Judy Luther, who are both librarians
with extensive serials backgrounds and experience with journal
publishers.

Invitation to Public Hearing on Pricing Models, RSVP by Jan. 5th
We invite you to join your colleagues, our consultants, and us at the
hearing, where a continental breakfast will be provided. It will be
at the U.S. Grant Hotel (326 Broadway), Garden Room, from 8:00 to
9:00 am on Saturday, January 10th. If you will attend, RSVP to
melanie@muse.jhu.edu by Monday, January 5, 2004. For planning
purposes, please note the number of representatives you expect to
have attending from your institution.

Other Opportunities for Your Feedback
Also at ALA Midwinter, Aileen McHugh, Judy Luther or October Ivins
will be available to discuss your reactions to the pricing models in
the Project MUSE booth, number 178. At least one of them will be
there according to this schedule:
Saturday, Jan. 10th 11:00 am -12:30 pm, 2:00-4:00 pm
Sunday, Jan. 11th 9:30 -11:30 am, 1:30-4:30 pm
Monday, Jan. 12th 9:30 -11:00 am, noon to 2:00 pm

The consultants will also conduct two focus groups at ALA and will
send an invitation to apply separately. During January they will
conduct a web-based survey of Project MUSE subscribers and potential
subscribers on this topic.

Background

We would like to provide background information about the need for
new models and some factors that may be included in the models. If
you attended the ICOLC conference in September 2003, some of this
information will be familiar to you.

Project MUSE supports both librarians and nonprofit publishers by
delivering journals in electronic form as part of an affordable
package. Library discounts for MUSE are based on size and type of
library and consortia affiliation. This model worked during the
initial period of high growth, when the additional revenue was new
money for publishers and when consortia were less prevalent. However,
the deep discounts produced by this model are not sustainable long
term for the following reasons, among others:

*Print cancellations are accelerating and what was "additional"
revenue for publishers now falls short of the amounts lost to current
print cancellations.
*Some publishers that currently have titles with Project MUSE either
won't consider adding more high-quality titles, or they are
considering withdrawing their high-quality titles from the collection.
*Many publishers that don't currently have titles with Project MUSE
find the current model unappealing and untenable, and are therefore
hesitant to participate.
* As the number of titles in Project Muse expands, the price of the
full Muse package is growing beyond the budget of liberal arts
colleges and smaller university libraries.
*All of the publishers in Project MUSE are nonprofit, and they face
heavy competition for their journals from the for-profit publishers.

Possible New Models

We are exploring pricing models that can accommodate the needs of
both librarians and publishers. The first four factors are intended
to increase revenues, and the last three are intended to create
options for libraries.

1) Cap the volume purchasing discount at a lower level than the
current model or eliminate the double discount. (This double
discount is created when a library takes advantage of both a discount
based on their size or type and one from a consortium or a regional
network cooperative purchase.)
2) Expand the range of price levels, offering a less expensive
category for very small institutions and a more expensive category
for very large institutions.
3) Consider the JSTOR model of offering no discount beyond the
sliding scale based on size and type of institution.
4) Freeze the packages with the 2004 collections and offer new
titles for additional fees.
5) Offer discipline based packages.
6) Offer a cross-disciplinary or discipline-specific core list
of 150 leading journals, possibly based on those included in the H.W.
Wilson indexes.
7) Continue/refine a flex plan for consortia to be able to pick
the titles (100 plus) they want on an annual basis.

We look forward to discussing these and other options with you. As
previously noted, in addition to the hearing, our consultants will
conduct focus groups at ALA and a web-based survey in January to
solicit your feedback. You may also email us during this time with
additional comments/concerns.

We believe that this process enables us to consider a broad range of
options and effectively identify your preferred options. Thank you
in advance for your participation.

Best wishes for the holiday season,

Subject: Project MUSE News: Muse Implements Access Statement

PROJECT MUSE IMPLEMENTS "ACCESS PROVIDED BY..." STATEMENT FOR FULL TEXT

Users accessing full text articles in Project Muse®, Scholarly
Journals Online, will now see an access statement identifying the
subscribing institution through which the user is accessing the
resource. The statement appears on the Muse basic search interface
and at the top of each full-text article page. Many of our
subscribers have requested such a feature, to help inform users that
Muse is a respected, peer-reviewed subscription resource paid for by
their library.

This new feature is automated, with the statement generated from our
database as the user accesses the site. Subscribing institutions
should note that if certain authorized users access Muse full text in
a manner other than directly on our server (e.g. through a third
party portal or platform), this feature may not appear as described.
If our system cannot identify a specific institution which matches
the IP address from which the user is accessing full text, a default
statement will appear stating "Access to full text is provided by
your local institution".

Subscribing institutions wishing to change the way in which their
institution is identified in the access statement should contact Muse
Subscriber Services at muse@muse.jhu.edu.

Subject: URGENT: Project MUSE Service Alert

URGENT: PROJECT MUSE SERVICE ALERT
Subscribers urged to access Muse at mirror site
(http://muse.uq.edu.au) during Hurricane Isabel

Project Muse's main servers are located at the Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore, MD. As you may be aware, Baltimore is
currently in the path of Hurricane Isabel, with tropical storm
conditions including high winds and flood threats expected throughout
the afternoon of Thursday, September 18, and into Friday, September
19. Should the storm result in a loss of electrical power or network
service to the Johns Hopkins University or the Baltimore area, users
will not be able to access Muse on our main server at the URL
http://muse.jhu.edu. However, subscribers are reminded that we have a
mirror server located at the University of Queensland (Australia),
which will remain available regardless of conditions in Baltimore.
Subscribing libraries are encouraged to direct users to access Muse
at the mirror site, http://muse.uq.edu.au, if they experience any
difficulties with access at the usual URL over the next 3-4 days. If
service is interrupted due to the storm, a notice will be sent out
once service is restored following the weather event.

The Johns Hopkins University Press, which manages Project Muse, will
be closing today, September 18, at 12:00 noon EDT, and will remain
closed tomorrow, September 19, to ensure the safety of our employees
during the storm. Project Muse subscriber support will not be
available from noon today until the Press re-opens on Monday,
September 22 at 8:00 am EDT.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this
weather-related emergency.

Subject: Project MUSE News: MUSE Offers New Resources for Librarians

PROJECT MUSE OFFERS NEW RESOURCES FOR LIBRARIANS
New "For Librarians" page provides tools and outreach materials

BALTIMORE (September 12, 2003) -- Project MUSE, an online collection
of scholarly journals in the Humanities, the Social Sciences, and the
Arts, announced that it recently added a "For Librarians" page to its
website: http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/librarian_resources/. This
valuable resource contains a wealth of information to help librarians
find out more about Muse and make the most out of a Muse subscription.

Some features include:

- Downloadable subject guides for 15 key academic disciplines covered
by MUSE, including journal lists and searching tips
- Frequently Asked Questions page detailing how MUSE works
- Tips to encourage the use of MUSE on campus and a promotional
materials request form
- A tool for generating MUSE usage statistics for libraries
- A tool to create a MUSE journal list that can be downloaded in
different formats including Excel
- MUSE journal e-mail alerts-receive weekly e-mails when a new
journal or when new issues of journals in our collection are released
- A conference directory to test-drive MUSE in person

The "For Librarians" page is the work of Project MUSE Usability and
Outreach Librarian Gina Calia-Lotz and Liz Brown, Manager of User
Services. Since joining the MUSE team in March, Calia-Lotz has been
gathering input from librarians about what resources and tools they
need from MUSE. Muse tested the concept of the page with librarians
at the ACRL conference in April and the ALA/CLA conference in June.
Attendees were extremely enthusiastic about the page, especially the
new subject guides.

As a former reference librarian for the Loyola/Notre Dame College
Library in Maryland, Calia-Lotz brings a library public services
perspective to MUSE. "MUSE is a high-quality resource that many
students and faculty can benefit from, yet there's a challenge
getting the message out," she said. "So we wanted to create more
instructional and 'promotional' materials that both students and
librarians could use depending on their local needs. We're still
sifting through all the feedback and working on even more new
resources, so we hope people will check the page often and continue
to submit ideas and suggestions." Please send comments on the "For
Librarians" page to gina@muse.jhu.edu.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Search Engine Enhancements Announced

PROJECT MUSE SEARCH ENGINE ENHANCEMENTS ANNOUNCED
E-Mail/Export Results, Subject Headings, Search History, and More

Project MUSE® is pleased to announce several new enhancements to the Muse
search engine. Users now have more options for working with their
results, including saving, e-mailing, exporting to RefWorks and EndNote,
and downloading and printing in text-only format. Users can also view
their search history, and follow links provided to modify the searches or
retrieve all of the results of the searches.

The display of the results page has been changed: Find information about
your current search at the top, including options to change the order and
display, followed by options to modify or narrow down your results, an
option to move between results pages, then your list of results. Links on
the right-hand side still take you to other search features and the search
help.

Users can now also view page numbers for all results, as well as the
subject headings Muse assigns to all articles. The subjects can be used to
get ideas for search terms or as a quick way to get a sense of an
article's topic.

Below is a bulleted list of the new features for librarians or users who
would like a brief, comprehensive guide to the new features. Please share
this information with anyone who would find it useful.

KEY FEATURES OF SAVING RESULTS

*You must save results before e-mailing and exporting. Mark all or some
results then click "Save Marked Entries." Go to next results pages and
save results as desired.

*Go to the saved results list from search results and from both search
screens

*Users can create a list of saved results from one or more searches within
the same "session" or browser window.

*Delete some or all saved results as desired.

*Checkboxes for selecting the saved results provide the ability to do
several different functions without having to re-save results

*E-mail saved results, with space for comments, subject line, and optional
return e-mail address

*Export citations directly into EndNote or RefWorks citation management
programs. Selecting the EndNote option will launch your EndNote program
and prompt to save to a library. Selecting RefWorks will launch RefWorks
and import the results.

*Display your saved results in text-only "printer friendly format" to
either download or print.

OTHER NEW FEATURES

*Use the "Search History" link from search results or search screens to
view all searches done in a session. Follow links to modify searches or
retrieve all results from searches.

*Re-sort and change the number of search results displayed by using the
pull-downs conveniently located at the top, next to the number of results
retrieved.

*Change your search using our "Modify Search" link to go back to your
search screen, or use our "Search Within Results" feature to narrow down
the existing results.

*Navigate to next or previous pages, or jump to different pages within
your results, conveniently located at the top and bottom of your displayed
results.

*The link to the article full-text is now from the title in the result
citation instead of from a separate link below the citation.

*Page numbers now display on the search results. (You can still also see
page ranges at the top of the HTML articles and page markers in the HTML
full-text).

*Subject headings display for all articles in Muse (subjects do not
display for book reviews).

*Please note that the subject headings are not hyperlinked. Users can
still search by subjects by selecting "LC Subject" in the pull-downs.
Users can simply type one or more subject terms, or paste in all or part
of a subject heading from the display.

*The "Mark All / Clear All" feature, located at the top and bottom of the
results, selects or clears all results on a page.

*The "Save Marked Results" button is also located at the top and bottom of
the results.

Please send any feedback, comments or questions to Liz Brown at
ebrown@jhu.edu. Tell us what you think, or suggest new features for the
search engine or search help.

Subject: Project Muse Conosrtium Renewal Information

PROJECT MUSE 2004 CONSORTIUM RENEWAL INFORMATION

*****************************************
This will be your primary notification of
Muse prices and renewal details for 2004 -- PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE
should you have any questions regarding renewals or subscriptions for
the 2004 subscription term. We will also be mailing hard copy versions
of our 2004 pricing grids, but we still recommend that you print out
this message and keep it on file. Please note the important DEADLINES
for renewal notification in the letter below. We appreciate your
efforts to notify us of your consortium's renewal plans in a timely
manner.
*****************************************

Dear Muse Consortium Partners,

You should have by now received Muse's 2004 pricing and subscription
options announcement via email. We are please to announce the addition
of 36 new journal titles to our collections in 2004, including several
from new international publisher partners. Project Muse continues to
offer institutional subscribers access to more quality full-text
journal content online. We are also pleased to inform our partners
that there will be no significant changes to our Consortium Volume
Discount plan or our usage policies for 2004.

As indicated in our recent announcement,
participants in the Volume Discount Plan will have FIVE Muse
collection options from which to choose for 2004. Along with the 2004
Full Collection (including all titles currently offered in the Full
Collection plus the 36 new titles), Arts &amp; Humanities Collection,
Social Sciences Collection, and Johns Hopkins University Press
package, we are offering, for 2004 only, the option for subscribers to
continue with the 2003 Full Collection (not including any of the new
content for 2004). We are introducing this option in an effort to
address the concerns we have heard from many institutions regarding
the economic pinch as budgets have been slashed or tightened. We hope
this option will help alleviate financial concerns while still
allowing libraries and their patrons to benefit from our collection.
Please see the 2004 pricing and subscription announcement for further
details on new Muse content for 2004. Please review the announcement
carefully as it includes important details both the new titles in Muse
as well as titles that will not be continuing with the database. We
encourage you to redistribute any and all of this information to your
member institutions.

To reiterate the information in the announcement, the list prices for
the five collections offered to consortium participants are:
2004 Full Collection: $20,000
2003 Full Collection: $18,000
Arts and Humanities Collection: $14,800
Social Sciences Collection: $11,400
Johns Hopkins University Press package: $5,000

Price increases for the Muse collections are a result of the addition
of new content to the database, as well as increases in print
subscription rates, which are set by the print edition publishers of
the journals and which Muse is not legally permitted to influence. The
median increase in print subscription rates across all Muse publishers
for 2003 was only 6%, despite increasing challenges to publishers
including rising print cancellation rates and the Rowecom situation.
With Muse's generous discount scheme for certain categories of
libraries, and volume discounts we offer for consortium purchases, the
average subscriber to a Muse journal collection pays only 53% of list
price, resulting in a very modest average price per journal of only
$36. All subscriptions to Project MUSE journal collections include
available backfiles (up to eight volumes for selected titles);
unlimited campus-wide access, downloading, and printing;
ICOLC-compliant statistics reporting; and enhanced online
functionality.

Additional details on Project Muse 2004 collections, including title
lists and the consortium pricing grid, will be posted on our web site
shortly. There are no significant changes to the Consortium Volume
Discount plan or subscription agreement. There have been no changes to
the Terms &amp; Conditions of Muse subscriptions, found on our web
site at http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/terms.html. Please be sure
your member institutions are familiar with our terms. You may copy and
distribute this page as needed, or link to it from your web site.

If you would like a list of your current members participating in
Muse, and projected renewal prices for these institutions (assuming
they continue with their current subscription option), we will be
happy to prepare one upon request. We will also be mailing hard copies
of the 2004 consortium pricing grid.

**All of your members' current subscriptions will expire at 12:00
midnight on December 31, 2003.** Please begin contacting your member
institutions regarding their renewal plans for Project Muse as soon as
possible. Institutions are welcome to change their Muse collection
selection upon renewal. Institutions may upgrade their Muse collection
at any point during the subscription term, but may downgrade only upon
renewal. Any members of your consortium not currently subscribing are
welcome to join at any time, and we are also happy to conduct
complimentary trial subscription periods for those who may wish to
examine the database further before making a purchasing decision.

******** IMPORTANT: When you have confirmed your member institutions'
Project Muse renewal plans, please return a list of anticipated Muse
subscribers from your group to us. Please ensure the list
contains the following: name of institution, Muse colection chosen,
and any updates to that institution's IP range(s). Note that
the latter information is not only necessary to enable access but also
to ensure accurate usage statistics reporting. This list should be
directed to Lora Czarnowsky by email at llc@jhu.edu or fax to
410-516-6968. The number of subscribers on this list will be
used to determine your consortium's volume discount level for 2004
and we will generate your 2004 invoice from the list.

In order to allow us to invoice your consortium in a timely manner, we
would like to request your 2004 subscriber list be sent to Lora's
attention no later than November 1, 2003. Provided we receive
your confirmed participation list by this date, you will receive your
2004 Project Muse invoice no later than November 30, 2003, with
payment due 30 days after receipt of invoice. Please remember that
among the requirements for a consortium to qualify for the Muse
discount program are the stipulations that subscription fees for all
members of the consortium will be billed on a single invoice, and that
this invoice be paid with a single check containing payment in full.
Partial payments will be returned to the consortium and will not be
credited to your account.

Please note that due to our transition this year to a new subscription
fulfillment and access system, we are no longer able to grant
extensive grace periods as we have done in the past while awaiting
consortium payments. IF WE DO NOT RECEIVE YOUR CONSORTIUM'S FULL
PAYMENT BY JANUARY 31, 2004, ALL MEMBERS OF YOUR CONSORTIUM WILL LOSE
ACCESS TO MUSE, AND THAT ACCESS WILL NOT BE RE-ENABLED UNTIL FULL
PAYMENT IS RECEIVED. Please help us to avoid complications later on by
submitting your 2004 subscription list (and if required, official
purchase order) as soon as possible, so that we may invoice your
consortium promptly and allow you plenty of time to submit full
payment by January 31, 2004. ************

We will be happy to address any questions that arise from your member
institutions regarding our 2004 subscription offer, but for
efficiency's sake, we ask that you have your members direct their
questions to you, and then you may forward them on to either Lora or
me. This way, should several consortia members have the same or
similar questions, we need only answer them once and you can
distribute the information back to all concerned.

Please watch the Muse &quot;What's New&quot;
page at http://muse.jhu.edu/journ_descrip/whats_new.html for further
announcements and updates. Thank you for your ongoing
encouragement and support of Project Muse as we work to bring
our subscribers more quality scholarly periodical literature in a
library-centric online publishing model. As always, your feedback,
comments and ideas are welcome.

Best Regards,
Melanie

Dear Project Muse Subscriber,
You should have by now received Muse's 2004 pricing and subscription
options announcement via email. We are please to announce the addition
of 36 new journal titles to our collections in 2004, including several
from new international publisher partners. Project Muse continues to
offer institutional subscribers access to more quality full-text
journal content online. We are also pleased to inform our subscribers
that there will be no significant changes to our licensing or usage
policies. We continue to make enhancements to our search engine, enter
into linking arrangements with third-party partners, and improve our
statistics reporting package, all part of our efforts to make Muse
content more accessible and management of your subscription
easier.

As previewed at our User Group meeting at the ALA Annual conference,
the Muse 2004 Full Database Collection will include content from 258
journals representing over thirty publishers, including the 36 new
additions. The list price for this collection for 2004 is $20,000. In
an effort to address the concerns we have heard from many regarding
budget cuts and shortfalls in the upcoming year, we are offering, for
2004 only, the option for subscribers to continue with the 2003 Full
Collection (not including any of the new content for 2004), with a
list price of $18,000. We hope this option will help alleviate
financial concerns while still allowing libraries and their patrons to
benefit from our collection. Muse will again offer two
discipline-oriented journal collections, Arts & Humanities and
Social Sciences, and several publisher collections will also continue
to be offered. Please see the 2004 pricing and subscription
announcement for further details on new Muse content for 2004. Please
review the announcement carefully as it includes important details
both the new titles in Muse as well as titles that will not be

the Muse collections offered for 2004 are:
2004 Full Collection: $20,000
2003 Full Collection: $18,000

Johns Hopkins University Press package: $5,000
University of Nebraska Press Package: $540
University of North Carolina Press Package: $260
Penn State University Press Package: $500

receive a renewal invoice early this autumn. Please note that renewals

PROJECT MUSE ANNOUNCES NEW TITLES AND PRICES FOR 2004 COLLECTIONS
Newest Additions Include Collaborations with International Publishers

Baltimore, MD (July 31, 2003) - Project MUSE, an online collection
of scholarly journals in the Humanities, the Social Sciences, and the
Arts, today confirmed new journals joining the project in 2004, as
well as its subscription prices for 2004 collections. Among its new
participating publishers for 2004, Project MUSE is pleased to
announce several collaborations with international partners,
including the University of Toronto Press, Singapore University
Press, and the Indian Institute for Population Studies (Thailand).
New journals joining the collection will expand Muse's coverage in
diverse areas including music, area studies, film studies,
demography. literature, and legal studies.

"We are very excited to be a part of Project MUSE, a service that
addresses the needs of librarians, scholars and publishers in
innovative ways," said Anne Marie Corrigan, Vice President, Journals,
University of Toronto Press. "Muse is allowing university press
publishers to collaborate across international boundaries, providing
worldwide online exposure for our journal content." Among the notable
titles joining Muse in 2004 are Toronto's Journal of Scholarly
Publishing and the University of Toronto Law Journal, British Journal
of Aesthetics and Early Music, (both from the Oxford University
Press), China: An International Journal (Singapore University Press),
Latin American Politics and Society (University of Miami), Steinbeck
Studies and The Hemingway Review (University of Idaho Press), and
Film & History: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Film and Television
Studies (Historians Film Committee). A complete list of new journals
appears below.

List prices for the journal collections offered by Muse for 2004 are
now available. The "2004 Full Collection," including all of the
current titles plus the thirty-six (36) newly announced journals,
will have an annual subscription fee of $20,000. This is less than an
18 percent increase from the current year's subscription rate with
the benefit of significantly more quality content to support
humanities and social science programs. With Muse's generous discount
scheme for certain categories of libraries, and volume discounts for
consortium purchases, the average subscriber pays only 53% of list
price, resulting in a very modest average price per journal of only
$36. Nearly 80% of the journals in Muse include at least two years of
back files in addition to current content, and several titles include
up to seven volumes of back issues, at no additional charge.

"Over the last year, we have heard from many institutions that they
have felt the economic pinch as budgets have been slashed or
tightened," said Aileen M. McHugh, Project MUSE Director of
Electronic Publishing. "Therefore, we have designed several pricing
options only for 2004 to help alleviate financial concerns while
still allowing libraries and their patrons to benefit from our
collection."

For the 2004 subscription term only, subscribers will also have the
option to maintain the "2003 Full Collection." This includes the
journals in the current 2003 full collection, without the new titles
to be added in 2004. The list price for this collection will be
$18,000. All subscriptions to Project MUSE journal collections
include available backfiles; unlimited campus-wide access,
downloading, and printing; ICOLC-compliant statistics reporting; and
enhanced online functionality.

Muse will again offer two discipline-oriented journal collections:
Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences. Several publisher collections
will also continue to be offered. The list price for the 2004 Arts
and Humanities Collection, with twenty-six (26) new journals, is
$14,800. The 2004 Social Sciences Collection lists at $11,400, with
twenty-four (24) new titles included. The Johns Hopkins University
Press package will have a list price in 2004 of $5,000. Complete
details on the titles included in the 2004 Muse collections will be
available on the Muse web site shortly.

The 2004 Full Collection, 2003 Full Collection, the Arts & Humanities
Collection, the Social Sciences Collection and the Johns Hopkins
University Press Package will continue to be available for
subscription under Muse's popular Consortium Volume Discount Plan.
For 2004, Muse has also introduced a new option for consortia, the
Flex Plan. This plan allows a group of libraries to design a custom
collection of Muse journals, with tiered discounts based upon the
number of participating libraries and the number of journals included
in the consortium's customized collection. A minimum of five
participating libraries and at least 100 journals in the custom
collection are required to qualify for discounts. Due the increased
administrative costs associated with the Flex Plan, discounts for
this model are smaller than those offered under the Volume Discount
Plan for pre-packaged collections. Details on all of Muse's
consortium offerings can be obtained by contacting the Muse office.

Some journals currently published online in Muse will not be
continuing forward after 2003. Two titles, Philosophy & Public
Affairs and the Journal for the Psychoanalysis of Culture and
Society, have been acquired by commercial presses, making them
ineligible for Muse. Wide Angle, Transition, Nepantla: Views from
South, and Hopscotch have all ceased publication. Transformation:
Critical Perspectives on Southern Africa and Eastern Africa Social
Science Research will be made available under a new arrangement
between the Michigan State University Press and the university's
library. Per Muse policy, all issues of these journals currently
online in Muse will remain online and available to subscribers.

Project MUSE operates on a calendar year subscription term and all
current subscriptions will expire on December 31, 2003. Subscribers
are encouraged to renew promptly to ensure uninterrupted access to
Muse.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Muse Introduces Consortium Flex Plan

PROJECT MUSE ANNOUNCES NEW FLEX PLAN OPTION FOR CONSORTIA

New plan addresses subscribers' budget issues while providing tailored
collections

BALTIMORE (June 26, 2003) - Project MUSE, an online collection of scholarly
journals in the Humanities, the Social Sciences, and the Arts, today
announced its new Flex-Plan Subscription Option for consortia in 2004.
Starting with 2004 subscriptions, library consortia will be able to design
and tailor Muse collections to best meet their needs and budgets. [Please
refer to separate release announcing Muse's new 2004 title additions.]
As an alternative to the current "pre-packaged" collections, the Flex-Plan
will allow the consortia to customize their journal collections. All
libraries in the consortium will have access to the same custom collection.

"Project MUSE continues to grow, offering more journals and expanding our
coverage in the humanities and social sciences," said Aileen M. McHugh,
Project MUSE Director of Electronic Publishing. "With the current economic
climate, many libraries are challenged to maintain their resources through
budget cuts and rising expenses. In order to help libraries ensure the most
efficient use of their subscription dollars, we are pleased to announce the
Muse Consortium Flex-Plan."

Though the Flex-Plan will offer subscribers more flexibility and options within
their collections, those consortia whose members subscribe to pre-packaged
collections through Muse's current Consortium Volume Discount Plan will
receive deeper discounts on those collections. Under the new Flex Plan, the
consortium may select a customized package of at least 100 Muse journals,
to which all the libraries in the group will have access. A minimum of five
libraries in the consortium is required to qualify for discounts. Discounts
will be tiered based upon the number of participating libraries and the
number of journals in the custom collection, with a maximum discount of
30 percent. Individual libraries will retain the ability to upgrade their
subscription to the Muse Full Database collection outside of the consortium
arrangement, if desired.
Project MUSE's mission is to provide electronic access to primary current
periodical content from not-for-profit publishers in the humanities and
social sciences to research libraries, master's colleges and universities,
four-year colleges, and a mix of community colleges, public libraries, high
schools and other special libraries nationally and internationally. Managed
by the Johns Hopkins University Press, in collaboration with the Milton S.
Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University and the participating
publishers, Muse currently provides online access to over 200 titles from
some 30 publishers to its over 1,000 subscribing libraries worldwide. The
Project has been hailed for its library-friendly licensing and usage
policies, easy online navigation, and reasonable pricing plans.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Muse Announces 2004 Titles, Preliminary Prices

PROJECT MUSE ANNOUNCES NEW TITLES, PRELIMINARY PRICES FOR 2004 COLLECTIONS

Baltimore, MD (June 26, 2003) - Project MUSE, an online collection of
scholarly journals in the Humanities, the Social Sciences, and the Arts,
today announced new journals joining the project in 2004, as well as
preliminary subscription price estimates for collections to be offered
in 2004. Among its new participating publishers for 2004, Muse is pleased
to announce key collaborations with international partners - new
participating publishers include the University of Toronto Press and
the Indian Institute for Population Studies (Thailand). New publishers
and journals so far confirmed for 2004 were announced at the joint
American Library Association/Canadian Library Association (ALA/CLA)
conference in Toronto, June 19 - 25, 2003. [A list of new publishers and
journals confirmed to date appears below.].

"We are very excited to be a part of Project MUSE, a service that
addresses the needs of librarians, scholars and publishers in innovative
ways," said Anne MarieCorrigan, Vice President, Journals, University of
Toronto Press. "Just as the joint ALA/CLA conference is encouraging
cross-border cooperation among library professionals, MUSE is allowing
universitypress publishers to collaborate across international boundaries,
providing worldwide online exposurefor our journal content."

Additionally, Project MUSE announced preliminary price estimates for
its major 2004 subscription offerings. The "Full Collection," including all
of the current titles plus the newly announced journals, will have an
annual subscription fee of no more than $20,000. This is less than an 18
percent increase from the current year's subscription rate with the benefit
of more quality content to support humanities and social science programs.
Additional new titles are expected to be announced for inclusion in this
collection, prior to the release of firm 2004 subscription rates on August 1.

"Over the last year, we have heard from many institutions that they have felt
the economic pinch as budgets have been slashed or tightened," said Aileen
M. McHugh, Project MUSE Director of Electronic Publishing. "Therefore, we
have designed several pricing options only for 2004 to help alleviate
financial concerns while still allowing libraries and their patrons to benefit
from our collection."

For the 2004 subscription term only, subscribers will have the option
to maintain the "2003 Full Collection." This includes the journals in the
current 2003 full collection, without the new 2004 titles. The list price
for this collection will be no more than $18,500. All subscriptions to Muse
journal collections include available backfiles; unlimited campus-wide access,
downloading, and printing; ICOLC-compliant statistics reporting; and
enhanced online functionality.

Please note that Muse will continue to offer discipline collections in the
Arts & Humanities and the Social Sciences, as well as selected publisher
packages. Official prices and new titles for these packages will be
confirmed by August 1. The 2004 Full Collection, 2003 Full Collection,
the Arts & Humanities Collection, the Social Sciences Collection and the
Johns Hopkins Press Package will continue to be available for subscription
under our popular Consortium Volume Discount Plan. Also, Muse is pleased to
announce a new Flex Plan subscription option for consortia, providing a
group of libraries with the opportunity to create a custom collection of
Muse journals for their consortium (see separate announcement for details).

new consortium subscription options designed to give libraries more
choice and flexibility in how they spend their subscription dollars.
We'll also be demonstrating some new features developed to enhance
usability of Muse, previewing some initiatives to help you promote
Muse on your campus, updating you on our partnerships and linking
arrangements with third party bibliographic database services, and
most importantly, answering your questions about Project MUSE. A
light breakfast will be available.

The meeting is scheduled for Saturday morning, June 21, from 8:00 am
- 10:00 am, the Pier 4 Room at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel (One
Harbour Square). We'll begin our brief presentation shortly after 8

customized emails alerting them when new journal issues are available
online.

Users may customize the service to receive alerts (including table of

titles in a specific subject area, all titles in a specific MUSE
collection, or a customized combination of any of the above. Users
may also opt to receive notices when a new journal title publishes

which there is a new issue of at least one of their chosen titles.

Users who currently receive announcements for all new issues via the
old Notification system will be automatically transferred to the new
system. Instructions will be included in the first several alerts
regarding how to create their preferences for journals for which they
receive the information. Librarians and users wishing to sign up for

Subject: Project Muse News: Muse Announces Subscription Change

For immediate release: May 14, 2003

PROJECT MUSE ANNOUNCES CHANGE IN INDIVIDUAL JOURNAL SUBSCRIPTIONS

Project MUSE, the prestigious online
collection of scholarly, peer-reviewed journals in the arts,
humanities, and social sciences, announced today that beginning with
the 2004 calendar-year subscription term, it will no longer sell
subscriptions for all of its participating publishers on a
title-by-title basis. Currently, institutions can purchase each of the
titles in the Project MUSE database on a title-by-title basis in
electronic-only or combined print/electronic subscriptions. Online
access is provided through the MUSE platform, and orders and payments
are processed through MUSE.

In 2004, MUSE will sell electronic subscriptions to institutions on a
title-by-title basis only if the participating publisher chooses this
option. Participating publishers can also choose to sell
electronic subscriptions to their journals on a title-by-title basis
through their own site only or through other vendors. All of
these titles will continue to be available through the Project MUSE
collections.

In the coming months, each of the participating MUSE publishers will
announce its plans for sales of single-title electronic
subscriptions. Project MUSE will post this information on its
website as soon as the publishers make it available.
Subscription agents and libraries are urged to contact the individual
publishers with questions about their plans for selling electronic
subscriptions on a title-by-title basis.

"In 2004, Project MUSE will be
expanding our offerings and adding new functionality to our online
collections," stated Aileen McHugh, Director of Electronic
Publishing for MUSE. "By reducing our involvement in
title-by-title sales, we can focus on addressing our larger mission of
providing users with integrated, comprehensive, and high-quality
collections of online scholarly journals."

The 2004 new titles and subscription offerings for Project MUSE will
be announced shortly.

Project MUSE's mission is to provide electronic access to primary
current periodical content from not-for-profit publishers in the
humanities and social sciences to research libraries, master's
colleges and universities, four-year colleges, and a mix of community
colleges, public libraries, high schools and other special libraries
nationally and internationally. Managed by the Johns Hopkins
University Press, in collaboration with the Milton S. Eisenhower
Library at Johns Hopkins University and the participating publishers,
MUSE currently provides online access to over 200 titles from some 30
publishers to its nearly 1,000 subscribing libraries worldwide. The
Project has been hailed for its library-friendly licensing and usage
policies, easy online navigation, and reasonable pricing plans.

Project MUSE News: Zambezia Will Not Be Online in Muse

Project Muse regrets to announce that
Zambezia, a title from the Michigan State University Press originally
announced as joining Muse in 2002, will not be published online in
Muse. Production delays and difficulty obtaining the files necessary
to produce the journal online have made it necessary to discontinue
plans to include the title in Muse. Muse is committed to providing
timely online availability of journals in the collection, with most
issues available electronically prior to the print edition mail date.
Titles that cannot meet our production schedules may, in extreme
circumstances, be discontinued from Muse, in order to avoid disruption
of the production process for titles that are on schedule.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Search Interface Improvements and Full-Text Defaults Introduced

PROJECT MUSE INTRODUCES SEARCH INTERFACE IMPROVEMENTS AND FULL-TEXT DEFAULTS

Project Muse is pleased to announce several improvements to our Basic and
Advanced search functions, both in the behind-the-scenes operation and the user
interfaces. While the changes will appear minor to most regular users of the
search feature, they greatly enhance the accuracy and ease of searching for the
Muse full-text collections.

DEFAULTS TO SUBSCRIBED FULL TEXT
A key feature, much requested by Muse subscribers, is an automatic default on
both the Basic and Advanced screens to search only those journals to which the
user's institution subscribes. This default function means that users will get
results only from those titles for which they will be able to access the full
text. An option on both screens allows users to expand the search to the full
Muse collection, allowing them to view citations from all the Muse journals even
if their institution does not have access to all the full text.

IMPROVED BOOLEAN CAPABILITIES

Project Muse has also implemented better, more reliable processing of searches
with Boolean operators. In addition, search terms are processed more
consistently between basic and advanced search screens. The search on both
screens will automatically combine terms, but users can now type in Boolean
operators (AND, OR, NOT), quotation marks for exact phrases, and parentheses to
force processing of the search in the order they want.

Formerly, the basic search screen did not support typing in Boolean operators;
users were required to select from radio buttons to combine terms with "AND,"
"OR," or as an exact phrase; combining operators was not possible at all in
basic. The advanced interface defaulted all entries to be searched as a
phrase, and did not support any other combination of terms within a single entry
box. We hope users will find the changes more intuitive.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

Additional minor improvements have been made to enhance the usability of the
Muse search interface. The advanced screen "Limit Search By Journal" feature has
been enhanced so that users can see by default the list of journals to which
theyhave access, and limit their search selections accordingly, and can also
choose an option to limit by subject group. The little-used collection limit
option, which corresponded to subscription packages, has been removed. Also,
users and librarians alike can now view a help pop-up from the basic screen
which lists the specific full-text journals available to them.

Relevancy ranking has been improved, and the little-used "rank by number of
occurrences" option has also been removed. Date limit pull-downs have been
replaced with free-text entry fields for greater flexibility.

Continued improvements to the search engine are always based on ongoing customer
feedback as well as usability testing conducted by Project Muse. We will be
giving demos of these new features at upcoming conferences such as ALA Midwinter
and ACRL, and also invite your comments and suggestions at muse@muse.jhu.edu.
