MUSE SEEKS FEEDBACK ON JSTOR LINKING - SURVEY DEADLINE EXTENDED
(Participate in our Customer Survey and Be Enrolled in a Drawing
for Free JHU Press Books!)
**EXTENDED Survey Deadline: DECEMBER 20, 2002
As you may be aware, Project Muse has
recently announced an initiative to provide links to full-text
articles in JSTOR . Through a reciprocal linking agreement, we plan to
provide tables of contents on Muse for complete runs of titles held
both in JSTOR and Muse as well as the ability to search those complete
runs. Users at libraries with JSTOR access who search and browse these
titles will then be able to follow links to articles on JSTOR.
In November we announced a survey regarding
the implementation of those links, and in an effort to ensure we
receive feedback from libraries representative of all Muse customer
constituencies, including both those with and those without JSTOR
access, we are extending the deadline for participating in the survey
until *December 20, 2002.* We realize that this is a busy time of year
for everyone and very much appreciate your time in contributing your
ideas to this important project. We're offering some special
incentives for librarians who complete the survey in full! (See
below.)
In developing our approach for this kind of
external linking, we would like to provide the best possible benefit
for our customers who have access to JSTOR, but we also seek to
prevent any confusion or inconvenience for users who are not JSTOR
members. We've benefited greatly from talking with many of our
customers and getting feedback on prototypes we've developed. We are
interested in learning more about the needs of customers who have
access to either all or some of the JSTOR collections, and if
providing OpenURL capabilities will be helpful in making sure users
get the appropriate links. However, many customers tell us that they
want links, but not to services their libraries don't have, so it is
equally important that we have feedback from Muse subscribers who do
not currently participate in JSTOR.
If you or someone at your institution has
already completed the survey, please accept our thanks for your time
and pardon the interruption. If your library has not yet completed the
survey, you may access it at:
http://muse.jhu.edu/cgi-bin/jstor_feedback.cgi
If you email program does not permit you to
link directly to the questionnaire, you may cut and paste the above
link into any web browser. **We will now be accepting responses to the
survey until December 20, 2002.**
We appreciate your time and feedback as we move forward with this
exciting project to enhance the online research environment for Muse
users. Your responses to the survey will help guide us toward final
implementation of JSTOR links and possibly links to other non-Muse
full-text sources in the future. In recognition of your valuable time
and comments, all librarians who submit a fully completed survey will
be entered in a drawing for free books from the Johns Hopkins
University Press & the winners will receive gift certificates for
$100, $50, or $25 to purchase the books of their choice. You may
browse JHUP's great selection of titles at www.press.jhu.edu
Please contact Muse at muse@muse.jhu.edu with any questions
regarding the survey or any other thoughts you'd like to share.
Thanks for your support of Muse!

Muse Introduces Holdings Data Tool
One of the most-requested features by Muse
subscribers has been the ability to download or output information
about the Muse journals holdings so that libraries may keep local
holdings lists and databases up-to-date. In response to this request,
we are pleased to announce the availability of a new Journal Holdings
Information tool, allowing subscribers to retrieve the information
they require on demand.
Available on the Muse web site at
http://muse.jhu.edu/cgi-bin/output_journal.cgi, the new Holdings
Information tool will allow librarians at subscribing institutions to
download details about the titles included in Muse. Users may select a
customized data set from fields including journal title, journal
homepage URL, print ISSN, electronic ISSN, first issue online, last
issue online (where applicable), and print edition publisher. The
information retrieved may be limited to only those titles in the Muse
collection to which the institution subscribes, or even to titles in
specific subject areas. Results can be requested in either
comma-delimited or tab-delimited text formats, or as a file that can
be opened in Microsoft Excel.
The Journal Holdings Information Tool is
available on a public area of the Muse web site so that
non-subscribing institutions may also download the data for
informational purposes. Questions or comments about the tool should be
directed to Muse subscriber support at muse@muse.jhu.edu.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Muse Announces Consortium Prices and Titles for 2003
PROJECT MUSE 2003 CONSORTIUM SUBSCRIPTION PRICES AND OPTIONS NOW AVAILABLE
******************
This will be your primary notification of
Muse prices and renewal details for 2003 -- PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE
should you have any questions regarding renewals or subscriptions for
the 2003 subscription term. We will also be mailing hard copy versions
of our 2003 pricing grids, but we still recommend that you print out
this message and keep it on file. Please note the important DEADLINES
for renewal notification and payment in the letter below. We
appreciate your efforts to notify us of your consortium's renewal
plans in a timely manner.
******************
Dear Muse Consortium Partners,
We are pleased to announce that 2003 Project Muse pricing and title
information is now available on our web site at
http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/new2003.html. With 26 new journal titles
set to join our collections in 2003, Project Muse continues to offer
institutional subscribers access to more quality full-text journal
content online. We are also pleased to inform our partners that there
will be no changes to our successful consortium licensing plan or our
usage policies.
As announced at our User Group meeting at
the ALA Annual conference, the Muse Full Database Collection for 2003
will include content from 221 journals representing over thirty
publishers, including the 26 new additions, four from new partners in
the project. The list price for this collection for 2003 is $17,000.
We will also continue to offer to consortium subscribers our two
discipline collections, Arts & Humanities (162 titles, 2003 list
price $12,000), and Social Sciences (123 titles, 2003 list price
$9,500), as well as the Johns Hopkins University Press collection (52
titles, list price $4,600). Price increases for the Muse collections
are a result of the addition of new content to the database, as well
as increases in print subscription rates, which are set by the print
edition publishers of the journals and which Muse is not legally
permitted to influence. The average increase in print subscription
rates across all Muse publishers for 2003 was just over 6%. With
Muse's generous discount scheme for certain categories of libraries,
and volume discounts we offer for consortium purchases, the average
subscriber to a Muse journal collection pays only 48% of list price,
resulting in a very modest average price per journal of only $37.
Nearly 80% of the journals in Muse include at least two years of back
files in addition to current content, and several titles include up to
seven volumes of back issues.
New publishers participating in Muse for 2003 include the University
of Illinois Press (Journal of Aesthetic Education), Ohio State
University College of Education (Theory into Practice), Society for
Military History (Journal of Military History), and West Chester
University (College Literature). As in previous years, many of the
current partner presses will be contributing additional titles to the
collection, expanding the database's offerings in film studies,
Latin American studies, linguistics, environmental studies, and
literature, among others. Several of these subject areas placed highly
in our recent subscriber survey of topics for which our customers
would like to see additional content offered.
Complete information on Project Muse 2003
prices, collection title lists, and subscription options is now
available on our web site at
http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/index2003.html. Please read the
subscription announcement carefully as it includes important details
on new titles in Muse as well as titles that will not be continuing
with the database. We encourage you to redistribute any and all of
this information to your member institutions. Consortium pricing grids
for 2003 are online at
http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/consortiumplan03.html. There are no
significant changes to our consortium discount plan or subscription
agreement. There have been no changes to the Terms & Conditions of
Muse subscriptions, found on our web site at
http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/terms.html. Please be sure your
member institutions are familiar with our terms. You may copy and
distribute this page as needed, or link to it from your web
site.
If you would like a list of your current members participating in
Muse, and projected renewal prices for these institutions (assuming
they continue with their current subscription option), I would be
happy to prepare one upon request. I will also be mailing hard copies
of the 2003 consortium pricing grid and 2003 title lists, should you
wish to copy and distribute them to your members. Please feel free to
direct your members to our web site for additional details as
well.
**All of your members' current subscriptions will expire at 12:00
midnight on December 31, 2002.** Please begin contacting your member
institutions regarding their renewal plans for Project Muse as soon as
possible. Institutions are welcome to upgrade their database package
selection, either upon renewal or at any point during the subscription
term. Institutions may not downgrade their subscriptions at any time.
Any members of your consortium not currently subscribing are welcome
to join at any time, and we are also happy to conduct complimentary
trial subscription periods for those who may wish to examine the
database further before making a purchasing decision.
******** IMPORTANT: When you have confirmed your member institutions'
Project Muse renewal plans, please return a list of anticipated Muse
subscribers from your group to us. Please ensure the list
contains the following: name of institution, Muse package chosen, and
any updates to that institution's IP range(s) or domain name.
Note that the latter information is not only necessary to enable
access but also to ensure accurate usage statistics reporting. This
list should be directed to Lora Czarnowsky by email at llc@jhu.edu or
fax to 410-516-6968. The number of subscribers on this list will
be used to determine your consortium's volume discount level for
2003 and we will generate your 2003 invoice from the list.
In order to allow us to invoice your
consortium in a timely manner, we would like to request your 2003
subscriber list be sent to Lora's attention no later than OCTOBER 1,
2002. Provided we receive your confirmed participation list by
this date, you will receive your 2003 Project Muse invoice no later
than October 31, 2002, with payment due 30 days after receipt of
invoice. Please remember that among the requirements for a consortium
to qualify for the Muse discount program are the stipulations that
subscription fees for all members of the consortium will be billed on
a single invoice, and that this invoice be paid with a single check
containing payment in full. Partial payments will be returned to the
consortium and will not be credited to your account.
Please note that we have recently
transitioned to a new subscription fulfillment and access system, and
that this system will not allow us to grant extensive grace periods as
we have done in the past while awaiting consortium payments. IF WE DO
NOT RECEIVE YOUR CONSORTIUM'S FULL PAYMENT BY JANUARY 31, 2003, ALL
MEMBERS OF YOUR CONSORTIUM WILL LOSE ACCESS TO MUSE, AND THAT ACCESS
WILL NOT BE RE-ENABLED UNTIL THE PAYMENT IS RECEIVED. Please help us
to avoid complications later on by submitting your 2003 subscription
list (and if required, official purchase order) as soon as possible,
so that we may invoice your consortium promptly and allow you plenty
of time to submit full payment by January 31, 2003.

We realize that the many changes brought about by our continued
expansion may result in additional questions and concerns from your
member institutions. We will be happy to address any questions
that arise, but for efficiency's sake, we ask that you have your
members direct their questions to you, and then you may forward them
on to either Lora or me. This way, should several consortia
members have the same or similar questions, we need only answer them
once and you can distribute the information back to all concerned.
Please watch the Muse "What's New" page at

encouragement and support of Project Muse as we work to bring
our subscribers more quality scholarly periodical literature in a

comments and ideas are welcome.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Muse Announces Prices and Titles for 2003
PROJECT MUSE 2003 SUBSCRIPTION PRICES AND OPTIONS NOW AVAILABLE
*************************
Please Note: This is the only notification of 2003 Muse prices you
will receive prior to being invoiced for your 2003 renewal. ALL
current Muse subscriptions expire on December 31, 2002. Renewal
invoices are expected to be sent during October and November. If you
subscribe to Muse as part of a consortium arrangement, you will be
invoiced directly by your consortium. Please contact your consortium
representative with any questions regarding your invoice. PLEASE SAVE
THIS MESSAGE should you have any questions upon receipt of your
renewal invoice. Questions regarding renewals and invoices should be
directed to our Subscription Services department at
muse@muse.jhu.edu.
*************************
We are pleased to announce that 2003 Project Muse pricing and title
information is now available on our web site at
http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/new2003.html. With 26 new journal titles
set to join our collections in 2003, Project Muse continues to offer
institutional subscribers access to more quality full-text journal
content online. We are also pleased to inform our subscribers that
there will be no significant changes to our licensing or usage
policies. We continue to make enhancements to our search engine, enter
into linking arrangements with third-party partners, and improve our
statistics reporting package, all part of our efforts to make Muse
content more accessible and management of your subscription
easier.
As announced at our User Group meeting at the ALA Annual conference,
the Muse Full Database Collection for 2003 will include content from
221 journals representing over thirty publishers, including the 26 new
additions, four from new partners in the project. The list price for
this collection for 2003 is $17,000. Muse will again offer two
discipline-oriented journal collections, Arts & Humanities (162
titles, 2003 list price $12,000), and Social Sciences (123 titles,
2003 list price $9,500), and several publisher collections will also
continue to be offered. Price increases for the Muse collections are a
result of the addition of new content to the database, as well as
increases in print subscription rates, which are set by the print
edition publishers of the journals and which Muse is not legally
permitted to influence.
Complete information on Project Muse 2003 prices, collection title
lists, and subscription options is now available on our web site at
http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/new2003.html. Please use the links on
this page to access title lists and pricing grids for the various Muse
journal collections offered for next year. If you subscribe to Muse
via a consortium arrangement, please see our consortium pricing page
at http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/consortiumplan03.html. **Please
contact your consortium's office if you have questions regarding the
discount you may expect to receive in 2003.** Your consortium should
invoice you directly for your Muse renewal. Muse 2003 information is
also being provided to all major domestic subscription agents.
Please watch the Muse "What's New" page at

Subject: Project MUSE News: Volunteers Needed for JSTOR Link Testing
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MUSE-JSTOR LINK TESTING
As announced at the ALA Annual Conference and in recent issues of Muse News,
Muse has entered into a linking arrangement with JSTOR, The Scholarly Journal
Archive (www.jstor.org). As we develop the online prototypes for the links
between the Project Muse search engine and tables of contents and full-text
articles in JSTOR, we are seeking librarians at Muse subscribing institutions
for feedback and usability testing on these prototypes.
Currently, our development team is mapping out our approach for implementing the
Muse/JSTOR links. We want implementation to provide maximum benefit to Muse
users with JSTOR access, while avoiding inconveniencing or confusing users who
do not have access to JSTOR full text. We are currently exploring different
possibilities, including suppressing links for subscribers whose institutions
do not participate in JSTOR. In addition, we are researching how to deal with
users who have access to only part of JSTOR's collections.
We seek volunteers to view and test prototypes of the Muse search engine, new
journal homepages, and tables of contents. We would like to get feedback from
both subscribers who have access to JSTOR, and those who do not.
To volunteer to participate in this feedback and testing phase, please DO NOT
reply to this email -- instead, contact Liz Brown, Muse Metadata Librarian, at
ebrown@jhu.edu. While we cannot offer monetary compensation to those who
participate, volunteers who are willing to provide detailed feedback on the
entire set of prototypes will receive a special Muse thank you gift!

PROJECT MUSE ANNOUNCES RECIPROCAL LINKING WITH JSTOR
Project Muse has activated links from 14 of its journals to earlier issues of
these titles available through JSTOR (http://www.jstor.org), a non-profit
organization dedicated to the digital preservation of scholarly journals.
For these 14 journals, a complete digital run is now available between the
Muse and JSTOR holdings. Links placed on the journals' homepages in Muse
allow users who also have access to JSTOR to browse or search the earlier
issues. The JSTOR link opens up a new browser window, so users do not have to
leave their Muse session.
Muse is now developing plans for providing links to articles on JSTOR from
tables of contents and search results on Muse.
This linking initiative is the result of an agreement between Muse and
JSTOR to link up mutual journal holdings and make browsing and
searching the complete backfile of the titles as seamless as possible.
Users with access to both Project Muse and JSTOR can also take
advantage of links to Muse articles on the JSTOR site.
(See http://www.jstor.org/about/recent-issues.html for more information on
JSTOR's efforts).
The following Muse journals now include links to JSTOR
American Journal of Mathematics
American Literature
American Quarterly

Hispanic American Historical Review
Journal of the History of Ideas

THREE WEEKS REMAIN TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MUSE SUBSCRIBER SURVEY
Project Muse will be closing out our online subscriber survey on **Friday, April
12.** if you would like your voice to be heard, please complete the survey
before this date!
Project Muse is in the process of long-term planning for the future development
of the resource. We would like to find out what new features or initiatives your
library would like to see at Project Muse. We invite librarians at your
institution to fill out a Project Muse feedback survey covering features and
initiatives currently under consideration for development or inclusion. This
survey gives the opportunity to rank adding or altering features in our search
engine, providing links to JSTOR, supporting SFX, Z39.50, CrossRef and other
reference linking initiatives, and more. It also provides an opportunity for you
to tell us what kinds of new content you would like to see in Muse and in what
subject areas we should expand our collection!
Because the survey covers a wide variety of topics, we welcome responses from as
many different individuals at your institution as are interested in taking the
time to complete the questionnaire. The responses will help us plan what new
features to provide and what priorities to give to their implementation.
So, please tell us what you think! We would appreciate your help in planning for
future Muse development.
The survey can be found at http://euterpe.press.jhu.edu/~ebrown/feedback.html.
There is an option to take a brief one-page version, or to provide responses to
an additional page of more in-depth questions.
**If you have any questions about the survey, please e-mail Liz Brown at
ebrown@jhu.edu.** Please do not respond to this email.

attempt to moderate and get past the culture wars of the 1990s, Common Knowledge
has moved its headquarters, literally, to a war zone Israel and accordingly its
editorial interests have broadened to include culture wars of a less
metaphorical kind.

PROJECT MUSE USAGE STATISTICS UNDER REVISION
In autumn of 2001, in an effort to provide our subscribers with more efficient
and flexible usage statistics reporting, we implemented a new statistics
reporting system. Among the highlights of the new system are the ability for
subscribers to query it at any time for a current statistics report, and to
request reports for any time frame from one day to one year. While the
"self-service" functionality of the system has been well received, we are aware
that there are concerns among our subscribers about the contents and format of
the statistics reports generated by this new system. In response to these
concerns, we are now in the process of reformulating the new statistics
reporting system, with the ICOLC (International Coalition of Library Consortia)
"Guidelines for Statistical Measures of Usage of Web-Based Information
Resources" as a guide. If you are not familiar with these guidelines, or would
like more information about them, please see the ICOLC website at
http://www.library.yale.edu/consortia/.
Our goal is to have the revision of the new statistics reporting system
completed by the end of the first quarter of 2002. An announcement will be sent
to subscribers when the revision is complete and the reformulated statistics
package is ready for use. The new package will continue to offer self-service
functionality and enable subscribers to view up-to-the-minute usage statistics
at any time during the subscription term. If we encounter delays in the revision
of the new statistics system, we are also prepared to run subscriber statistics
reports for Quarter 1 2002 using our previous stats reporting system, which
generates quarterly reports and mounts them on a secure web page for viewing. If
we must revert to the previous system for this first quarter, subscribers will
receive the standard notification including the URL of the secure web page and a
username/password for accessing the first quarter usage reports.
The feedback and suggestions from subscribers have been invaluable as we
reformulate the new statistics system to better meet your needs. We appreciate
your thoughts and welcome any further comments as we complete the process. Thank
you for your patience and your continued support of Project Muse.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Visit Muse at ALA!
Dear Project MUSE Subscriber,<br />
Project Muse invites you to visit our exhibit at the upcoming American Library
Association Midwinter Meeting In New Orleans, January 18-21. Please stop by
booth #4446 for the latest news on Muse, details on 2002 pricing and titles, a
demo of our evolving search interface, news about linking initiatives,
promotional materials to help you promote Muse at your institution, and the
opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you have regarding Muse. We are
also looking for a few Muse users to assist us in further development of the
resource by participating in special sessions with our project librarian.
Project Muse is currently in the process of setting priorities and making key
decisions about future enhancements and additions to the database. As always,
theopinions of our library customers and their users are very important to us
as we make our plans! We'd like to thank all the librarians who have
participated so far in our online customer feedback survey, announced in
November. If you or your colleagues have not yet done so, please be sure to take
the survey, located at http://euterpe.press.jhu.edu/~ebrown/feedback.html. This
survey covers different features and initiatives under consideration at Muse,
such as search engine development and reference linking, as well as content
expansion. Your feedback will help us determine what kinds of development
are the most important for Muse!
In addition to the survey, Project Muse librarian Liz Brown will conduct
sessions with librarians at ALA for more focused feedback on Muse development.
These "one-on-one" sessions will consist of an informal survey and demo covering
search engine development, linking initiatives and more. We're targeting
librarians who work directly with or teach users how to use electronic
resources. The sessions take around 30-40 minutes and will be conducted in the
Muse exhibit booth, #4446.
Session participants will receive a free Project Muse shirt!! For more
information or to make an appointment before ALA, please email Liz at
ebrown@jhu.edu, or sign up during the conference at our booth. Even if you are
not able to participate in a session, your thoughts on the Muse's future
development are important to us -- please share your feedback via the survey
mentioned above, at the booth, or via email.
Thank you for your continued support of Project MUSE! We hope to see you in New
Orleans.
Regards,
Melanie Vandermark
