Subject: Project MUSE News: Subscriber Opinions Wanted!

Dear Project Muse Subscriber,
A penny for your thoughts?

Project Muse is in the process of long-term
planning for the future development of the resource. We would like to
find out what new features or initiatives your library would like to
see at Project Muse. We invite librarians at your institution to fill
out a Project Muse feedback survey covering features and initiatives
currently under consideration for development or inclusion. This
survey gives the opportunity to rank adding or altering features in
our search engine, providing links to JSTOR, supporting SFX, Z39.50,
CrossRef and other reference linking initiatives, and more. It also
provides an opportunity for you to tell us what kinds of new content
you would like to see in Muse and in what subject areas we should
expand our collection!

Because the survey covers a wide variety of
topics, we welcome responses from as many different individuals at
your institution as are interested in taking the time to complete the
questionnaire. The responses will help us plan what new features to
provide and what priorities to give to their implementation.

So, please tell us what you think! We would
appreciate your help in planning for future Muse development.

The survey can be found at
http://euterpe.press.jhu.edu/~ebrown/feedback.html. There is an
option to take a brief one-page version, or to provide responses to an
additional page of more in-depth questions.

**If you have any questions about the
survey, please e-mail Liz Brown at ebrown@jhu.edu. ** Please do
not respond to this email.

Thanks as always for your thoughts, and
your support of Project Muse.

Subject: Project Muse Renewals

Dear Project Muse Consortium Partners,<br />
This is a friendly reminder that we need confirmations on your consortium
members' 2002 Project Muse renewal plans as soon as possible. If you've already
sent in your confirmed list, thank you for your promptness! Please read on for
important details about Muse contacts in the next month.

I will be out of the country from November 30 - December 28, 2001. If you or any
of your member institutions will be attending the Online Information Expo at
London's Olympia Grand Hall from 4-6 December, please stop by the Muse exhibit
in Stand 631 Gallery. While I will be working until December 7, I do not know
how often or how easily I will be able to access email or voicemail from
overseas. After December 7, I will be on vacation until December 28.

*** From November 30 onwards, please direct all correspondence and inquiries
regarding renewals and other consortium subscription matters to our very capable
Subscriber Support Specialist, Lora Czarnowsky. Lora can be reached at
llc@jhu.edu or by phone at 410-516-6989. ***

Lora should be able to handle all renewals, new orders, pricing questions,
billing and access matters. She will know how to reach me in a truly urgent
case, but hopefully any matters she cannot handle can wait until my return to
the office on December 28.

Thanks as always for your enthusiastic support of Muse, and have a very happy
holiday season.

Best Regards,
Melanie

ADVERTISING & SOCIETY REVIEW MAKES EARLY DEBUT IN MUSE

The following electronic-only journal, previously announced as joining Muse in
2002, is being made available early to current Muse subscribers. While this
title is accessible by all Muse subscribers, its cost is not included in the
price of any Muse package. Rather, access to Advertising & Society Review is
being generously subsidized by the Advertising Educational Foundation, with
support from sponsors AOL Time Warner and True North Communications.

ADVERTISING & SOCIETY REVIEW

Advertising & Society Review is unique among electronic journals in the degree
to which the subject matter and the Internet interact to create a scholarly
publication that greatly surpasses those that preceded. Although
anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, historians,
economists, and scholars from cultural studies, communications, art history and
many other disciplines have considered this relationship between advertising and
its sociocultural context, no previous journal has devoted itself entirely to
this topic. Thus, one unique contribution of Advertising & Society Review will
be fostering interdisciplinary scholarship about advertising and its relation to
society, culture, history, and the economy by publishing top quality articles
and essays.

Subject: Project MUSE News: Muse 2002 Prices and Subscription Options Announced

PROJECT MUSE 2002 SUBSCRIPTION PRICES AND OPTIONS NOW AVAILABLE

******************
Please Note: You will not receive notification of Muse prices and
renewal details in any other format -- PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE should
you have any questions regarding renewals or subscriptions for the
2002 subscription term. You may wish to print it out and keep it on
file. Please note the important deadlines for renewal notification in
the letter below. We appreciate your efforts to notify us of your
consortium's renewal plans in a timely manner.
******************

Dear Muse Consortium Partners,

We are pleased to announce that 2002
Project Muse pricing and title information is now available on our web
site at http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/new2002.htm.
With 19 new journals and three new publisher
partners currently confirmed for 2002, Project Muse continues to offer
institutional subscribers access to more quality full-text journal
content online. While expanding our offerings, we remain aware of
library budgetary concerns, and are pleased to announce that Muse
prices for the next subscription term have come in well below
projections announced earlier in the year!

During User Group meetings at both the ACRL
and ALA Annual conferences, Muse management committed to a 2002 list
price of no more than $15,500 for the Full Database collection. The
actual list price for the Full collection for next year will be only
$14,000. This collection will include at least 190 full-text titles,
nineteen of them new to the database for 2002. More new titles are
anticipated during the term and will be available to current
subscribers at no extra charge. Consortium subscribers may once again
choose from four subscription options: Full Database Collection
(described above), Arts and Humanities collection (list price
$10,400), Social Sciences collection (list price $7,300) and Johns
Hopkins University Press collection (list price $4,200).

New publishers participating in Muse for
2002 include the Ohio State University Press, Princeton University
Press, and Slavica Publishing of Indiana University. Several current
partner presses will be contributing additional titles to the
collection, expanding the database's offerings in geography,
economics, higher education, public affairs, and ethnic studies, among
others.

Complete information on Project Muse 2002 prices, collection
title lists, and subscription options is now available on our web site
at http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/new2002.html. Please read the
subscription announcement carefully as it includes important details
on new titles in Muse as well as titles that will not be continuing
with the database. We encourage you to redistribute any and all of
this information to your member institutions. Consortium pricing grids
for 2002 are online at
http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/consortiumplan02.html. There are no
significant changes to our consortium discount plan or subscription
agreement. There have been no changes to the Terms &amp; Conditions of
Muse subscriptions, found on our web site at
http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/terms.html. Please be sure your
member institutions are familiar with our terms. You may copy and
distribute this page as needed, or link to it from your web
site.

If you would like a list of your current members participating in
Muse, and projected renewal prices for these institutions (assuming
they continue with their current subscription option), I would be
happy to prepare one upon request. I also have camera-ready masters of
the consortium pricing grid and our 2002 title lists available upon
request, should you wish to copy and distribute them to your members.
Please feel free to direct your members to our web site for additional
details as well.

All of your members' current subscriptions
will expire at 12:00 midnight on December 31, 2001. Please
begin contacting your member institutions regarding their renewal
plans for Project Muse as soon as possible.
Institutions are welcome to upgrade their database
package selection, either upon renewal or at any point during the
subscription term. Institutions may not downgrade their subscriptions
at any time. Any members of your consortium not currently subscribing
are welcome to join at any time, and we are also happy to conduct
complimentary trial subscription periods for those who may wish to
examine the database further before making a purchasing
decision.

******** IMPORTANT: When you have confirmed
your member institutions' Project Muse renewal plans, please return
a list of anticipated Muse subscribers from your group to us.
Please ensure the list contains the following: name of institution,
Muse package chosen, and any updates to that institution's IP
range(s) or domain name. Note that the latter information is not
only necessary to enable access but also to ensure accurate usage
statistics reporting. This list should be directed to Lora Czarnowsky
by email at llc@jhu.edu or fax to 410-516-6968. The number of
subscribers on this list will be used to determine your consortium's
volume discount level for 2002 and we will generate your 2002 invoice
from the list.

In order to allow us to invoice your
consortium in a timely manner, we would like to request your 2002
subscriber list be sent to Lora's attention no later than November
1, 2001. Provided we receive your confirmed participation list
by this date, you will receive your 2002 Project Muse invoice no later
than November 30, 2001, with payment due 30 days after receipt of
invoice. ************

We realize that the many changes brought
about by our continued expansion may result in additional questions
and concerns from your member institutions. We will be happy to
address any questions that arise, but for efficiency's sake, we ask
that you have your members direct their questions to you, and then you
may forward them on to either Lora or me. This way, should
several consortia members have the same or similar questions, we need
only answer them once and you can distribute the information back to
all concerned.

Please watch the Muse &quot; What's New&quot; page at
http://muse.jhu.edu/journ_descrip/whats_new.html for further
announcements and updates. Thank you for
your ongoing encouragement and support of Project Muse as we
work to bring our subscribers more quality scholarly periodical
literature in a library-centric online publishing model. As always,
your feedback, comments and ideas are welcome.

Best Regards,
Melanie

FRONTIERS PREMIERES IN MUSE

The following journal from the University of Nebraska Press, previously
announced as joining Project MUSE in 2001, is now online:

FRONTIERS
A Journal of Womens Studies

Frontiers is one of the oldest and most respected feminist journals in
the United States. Frontiers retains its original commitment to a
broad mix of scholarly work, personal essays, and the arts and to
multicultural and interdisciplinary perspectives offered in accessible
language. The cross disciplinary and culturally diverse nature of the
journal's feminist content makes it an ideal source of women's
history, cultural theory, literature, essays, art, criticism, and
pedagogical approaches. Frontiers is primarily interested in work that
bridges disciplines. The journal prides itself on publishing articles
that reach beyond single texts or single disciplines with the
intention of reaching audiences beyond the academy.

Subject: Project Muse News: Search Interface Upgrade Begins

PROJECT MUSE SEARCH INTERFACE UPGRADE BEGINS

This Friday, Muse will introduce some
changes to the interface on its search screens. While looking slightly
different, the interface will function essentially the same. We
anticipate that &quot;repeat users&quot; will not experience
disruption or confusion. The new changes are based on user requests,
usability testing, and analysis of our search logs, as summarized in
the current Muse News.

Users will have a new date limits feature in the advanced screen, as
well as an improved display for limiting to journal titles. We
currently provide the ability to limit to one or more journal titles,
to one or more groups of journals in the same general subject areas,
or to one or more journals in collections. Our new display will make
selection from the different options clearer.

We have also made some changes to the results, which will now display
the user's search terms and fields. We also will provide more
navigational links.

Users may also notice that some of the
terminology will be different, such as in the search field pull-down
menus. The new wording is the result of both librarian feedback and
usability testing. We have also provided small text instructions on
the search screens to guide users in how to use the interface. For
instance, our search boxes in the advanced screen default to
&quot;phrase,&quot; which is a feature that users of other databases
may not be used to.

This interface upgrade is the first step in
an initiative this fall to improve our search interface but also make
existing features easier to understand and use. In addition to
providing revised help screens with the changes, we will be providing
more help features in the coming weeks.

Along with email notifications such as
this, we will announce in our &quot; What's New&quot; section on Muse
when the changes have been made.

We continue to welcome suggestions and feedback on our search
engine and the Muse site in general. Search engine inquiries may be
directed to ebrown@jhu.edu, while general comments and suggestions
should be sent to muse@muse.jhu.edu.

PEDAGOGY

Pedagogy is an innovative journal that aims to build a new discourse around
teaching in English studies. Reversing the long history of marginalization of
teaching and the scholarship produced around it, it offers a forum for critical
reflection and spirited debate. The journal publishes articles by senior
scholars as well as more junior members of the profession, featuring voices from
many subdisciplines and institutions. Pedagogy promises to stimulate new and
exciting developments for undergraduate and graduate instruction in
English studies.

RADICAL HISTORY REVIEW

For more than a quarter of a century, Radical History Review has stood at the
point where rigorous historical scholarship and active political engagement
converge. The journal is edited by a collective of talented historians--men and
women with diverse backgrounds, research interests, and professional
perspectives. Articles in RHR address issues of gender, race, sexuality,
imperialism, and class, stretching the boundaries of historical analysis to
explore Western and non-Western histories. The journal stands unabashedly to the
left of center, as it has since its inception, and it carries its political
legacy as a sacred trust.
