Subject: Project Muse News: Portal: Libraries and the Academy will be Included in Muse in 2001
Project Muse has recently received many inquiries asking whether Portal:
Libraries and the Academy, the new library science journal from the Johns
Hopkins University Press, would be offered online in the Project Muse database
collection in 2001. Indeed, online access to Portal will be included in
subscriptions to the Full Database collection, Arts & Humanities collection,
Social Sciences collection, and Johns Hopkins University Press package.
Institutional electronic and/or print subscriptions to the journal may also be
ordered separately.
Portal: Libraries and the Academy, a quarterly journal, will launch in January
2001. Portal is a bold new move by academic librarians to disseminate
scholarship in all aspects of librarianship within higher education. This
scholarly journal will also explore how technology is affecting librarianship
and scholarship, as well as the role of libraries in meeting
institutional missions.
The information revolution has presented numerous challenges to librarians and
administrators in several areas including archiving, copyright, and distance
learning. Portal will cover these topics, and many others, as they relate to
the rapidly changing needs of academics and the roles of libraries and
librarians. Through the highest-quality research and news about librarianship
in higher education institutions, Portal will provide a much needed, fresh
perspective. Each issue will include peer-reviewed articles on subjects such as
library administration, information technology, and information policy. Reviews
of newly published books in areas of librarianship and higher education, as well
as reviews of computer and database resources will also be featured. Regular
columns will address policy and strategic planning, technological issues, and
management and personnel issues.
Sample contents from the first issue of Portal: Libraries and the Academy are
now online at
http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/portal_libraries_and_the_academy/toc/pla1.1.html.
Selected full text articles are available for viewing by all Muse
subscribers. (Please note: This is only a sample preview and should not be
cataloged or linked to from your web pages. As with all Muse journals, a formal
announcement will be sent when the actual Volume 1, Number 1 issue of the
journal goes online.)
Combined electronic and print institutional subscriptions to Portal: Libraries
and the Academy cost $188.50; electronic-only access is $130.50. To order a
personal print subscription for $48.00, please see

PROJECT MUSE TO LAUNCH NEW SEARCH ENGINE ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2000
Project Muse is pleased to announce that at 12:00 noon EST this Friday, October
6, we will officially launch our new search engine. The search engine, which has
been available for testing in beta format for several months, will become the
default search interface for Muse, and all "Search" links in the database will
direct users to the new interface.
Project Muse's new search engine provides stronger search capabilities and a
more user-friendly interface. Both basic and advanced search screens are
available, along with online documentation to assist users with their research.
A number of limits are provided to further target user queries, including
narrowing a search to as many individual journals as desired, searching by
journal collection, and specifying articles or reviews. Searching by subjects
will be added as an option in the near future. For further details on the new
search engine and its capabilities, please see the article "Who Knows What
You'll Find On Muse?" in the Spring-Summer 2000 edition of our Muse News
newsletter, available online at http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/news/.
The current Project Muse search engine will continue to be available for use
until December 31, 2000, via a link from the new search interface. We encourage
users to begin utilizing the new search engine immediately, to take advantage of
its enhanced features and easy-to-use interface. Librarians may wish to use the
online help screens provided with the new search to assist in transitioning
patrons to the new interface.
If you have set up direct web links to the current search engine, these links
will redirect to the new search as of noon EST on Friday, October 6. The actual
URL for the new search engine will be http://muse.jhu.edu/search/search.pl.
While you will not need to change your links, we strongly suggest that you take
the time to update them to the new URL if possible.
We appreciate your patience throughout the transition to this new and improved
search engine. We are confident your users will find searching Project Muse even
easier and more successful than in the past. Any questions or comments about the
new search should be directed to Elizabeth Brown at ebrown@jhu.edu.

feminist perspectives on film, television, and visual media. It consistently
combines excellence in scholarship with imaginative presentation and a
willingness to lead media studies in new directions. The journal has developed a
reputation for introducing emerging writers to the field. Its debates, essays,
interviews, and summary pieces encompass a spectrum of media practices,
including avant-garde, alternative, fringe, international, and mainstream.
Camera Obscura continues to redefine its original statement of purpose. While
remaining faithful to its feminist focus, the journal also explores feminist

Following the acquisition of the Journal of Academic Librarianship (JAL) in 1998
by a large European publisher, most members of JAL's editorial board tendered
their resignations in protest and sought out a publisher that was recognized for
its support of libraries. Brought together again at The Johns Hopkins
University Press, a publisher that shares their commitment to serve the library
community, these individuals now compose large part of Portal's editorial board.
However, the editors will not simply recreate JAL under a different name. The
editors bring their experience and skills to a new journal that will go against
the grain by addressing such controversies as the relative value of STM journals
and their effect on research libraries. Portal will provide an unbiased outlet
for issues that scholars have been unable or unwilling to address in
other venues.
The actions of Portal's editorial board have drawn praise from the library and
academic communities, including endorsements of the journal from the Association
of Research Libraries and SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources
Coalition). Rick Johnson, Enterprise Director of SPARC, said, "Portal is a
community built around the diverse information needs of its members. It offers
a superior alternative to commercial journals in this field, and is the kind of
initiative academic librarians everywhere should support."
Led by three well-known and respected librarians, Portal's editorial board is
comprised of leading scholars, administrators, and practitioners in library
science. Charles B. Lowry and Susan Martin serve as Executive Editors. Dr.
Lowry is Dean of Libraries at the University of Maryland, College Park and
served as column editor for JAL. He was the founding associate editor of
Library Administration and Management, the magazine of the Library
Administration and Management Association established in 1987. Dr. Martin is
University Librarian at Georgetown University and has served as editor of the
Journal of Library Automation and as a column editor for JAL. Managing Editor
Gloriana St. Clair is University Librarian at Carnegie Mellon University. She
served as an editor of JAL for three years and had previously been editor of
College and Research Libraries.
Dr. St. Clair, who will be managing the article refereeing, noted that "Portal
wants to be active in helping authors to achieve publication. In addition to
its regular refereeing, the Board will also recruit a cadre of interested
professionals who can help aspiring authors design their research projects,
handle their statistical problems, and write their results effectively. We will
not measure our success by a high rejection rate but by our ability to help
authors convey their research to other academic librarians." St. Clair urged
individuals to submit their scholarly work to her electronically at
gstclair@andrew.cmu.edu or to her attention at Hunt Library, Carnegie Mellon
University, 4909 Frew Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Because the journal is new,
early submissions will benefit from quick review and publication.
The Johns Hopkins University Press will begin publishing Portal: Libraries and
the Academy in January 2001. Annual subscriptions for individuals will cost
$48.00. The institutional subscriptions will be $145.00. Portal will also be
available on the World Wide Web as part of the Project MUSE\256 collection of
online journals. Visit muse.jhu.edu for more information.
A reception to celebrate Portal's launch will be held during the annual
conference of the American Library Association in Chicago on July 8 from
6 - 8 P.M. at the Museum of Contemporary Art. All academic librarians are
invited to attend.
The Johns Hopkins University Press has one of the largest not-for-profit
journals publishing programs in America, with more than 55 journals in print and
online. The Press publishes journals in the humanities, medicine, and the
social sciences. Its innovative publishing program embraces both traditional
and newer modes of scholarly communication.

Subject: Preview the New MUSE Search Engine
Dear Project MUSE Subscriber,
We are pleased to announce that Project MUSE is preparing to launch a new, and
much improved, search facility for the database. Our systems staff has been
working for quite some time on a new search engine utilizing Open Text Live Link
software, and we hope you will be as pleased as we are with the improved
accuracy and efficiency of the new engine.
You may have noticed a link on our search page inviting you to try our new
search engine. This link will take you to a preview of our new BASIC search
option, a screen designed to allow users to search across the entire database
using key search terms or an author's name. Users may limit the search by the
type of material (full text, abstracts, LC subject headings) and sort their
results by date, journal, article title, author, or relevancy ranking. We
welcome your feedback on this part of the new search engine -- please visit the
page, try a search, and let us know what you think. Comments and questions
should be directed to our system administrator at wagner@chaos.press.jhu.edu.
We will also be implementing a new ADVANCED search, which will offer all of the
above options, plus many additional features by which a user may refine their
search of MUSE. Queries may be applied to subsets of journals by discipline or
subject, to single journals, or across the database. The advanced search also
features clear and easy to use Boolean operators, and the ability to limit
searches by date ranges. Please watch for an announcement in the near future
regarding a preview of the advanced search.
Thank you for taking the time to view and test our new search facility. User
feedback has always been an important factor in the development of Project MUSE,
and we appreciate your participation!
Sincerely,
Project MUSE Customer Service

Subject: New Project MUSE posters available
Our popular Project MUSE promotional posters have been redesigned to reflect our
recent expansion and greater depth of content in the humanities and social
sciences. Based upon feedback from subscribing institutions, we printed the new
posters in the same convenient size, 11" x 17". The updated design features the
MUSE logo and our very own elegant muse Calliope, along with the Project MUSE
website URL and the phrase "Your source for essential periodicals in the
humanities, the social sciences, and the arts." Subscribing institutions have
found the posters to be effective tools in promoting usage of MUSE on campus.
Among the ways they have been used are placing them near public terminals in
the library and student computer labs, and distributing them to appropriate
departments (english, history, performing arts, etc.) for display on
departmental bulletin boards and in faculty offices.
If you would like to request a quantity of the new posters for use in promoting
Project MUSE at your institution, please contact Subscriber Support Specialist
Lora Czarnowsky via email at llc@jhu.edu. Please be sure to indicate the number
of posters you would like, and the name and complete mailing address of the
individual at your library to whom they should be sent.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support of Project MUSE!
