EIGHTEENTH CENTURY LIFE TO CONTINUE ONLINE AVAILABILITY IN PROJECT MUSE

Eighteenth Century Life, which as a Johns Hopkins University Press journal was
an original participant in Project MUSE, has been acquired by the Duke
University Press. Beginning with Volume 24, Issue 1, the print edition of the
journal will be published by Duke. Duke University Press is a Project MUSE
partner publisher and has opted to continue to make the title
available online in MUSE. Beginning with the 2000 calendar year subscription
term, subscribers to the Full Database, Arts and Humanities, and Duke University
Press packages will have access to current and archival issues of the title
online. Institutions who subscribed to the Johns Hopkins University Press
package prior to December 31, 1999, and who continue with that package for the
2000 term, will have access to articles from the journal up through the final
issue published by JHUP (Volume 23, Issue 3).

Dear Colleagues,

As of 9:00am tomorrow, all of the new Project MUSE consortium pricing for the
2000 subscription term will be available on the Project MUSE web site at
http://muse.jhu.edu/ordering/consortiumplan.html. You are welcome to link

Please also note that there is an error on the price sheets that were previously
faxed to you. On the Full Database Package price grid, the row of prices for
academic libraries with FTE<2000 is incorrect for volume discounts of 20%, 30%
and 40%. The numbers in this row, reading across, should be:

Vol. Discount 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50%

Academic $6000 $5400 $4800 $4200 $3600 $3000
FTE<2000

The prices on the website are correct. If you have recently been sent a
camera-ready copy of the price sheet, I will fedex you a corrected version
today. If you have not previously requested a camera-ready copy of the price
sheet, but would like to have one sent to you, please let me know and I will get
the updated version out to you ASAP. If you would prefer I fax an updated
version, please email me and I will do so. I apologize for any confusion and
inconvenience this may cause.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is any way we can
further assist you with your Project MUSE renewal efforts.

Subject: PRESS RELEASE: Project MUSE Annouces Pricing and Subscription Options for 2000

P R E S S R E L E A S E

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 15, 1999

PROJECT MUSE ANNOUCES PRICING AND SUBSCRIPTION OPTIONS FOR 2000

Incentive discount offered for early orders

Baltimore, MD - Firm prices and subscription options for the 2000 calendar year
term are now available for Project MUSE, the electronic journals database
managed by the Johns Hopkins University Press (JHUP). In June, JHUP announced
the expansion of MUSE to include full-text online access to titles from other
university presses. Nine other publishers are currently participating, bringing
the total number of journal titles offered in MUSE to 112 and more than doubling
the size of the collection. The publishers involved are Carnegie Mellon
University Press, Duke University Press, Indiana University Press, MIT Press,
Oxford University Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, University of
Hawaii Press, University of Texas Press, and the University of Wisconsin Press.

Institutional customers will have a choice of several flexible subscription
options to best meet their collection development needs. Along with the
complete collection of titles, convenient discipline-oriented packages and
packages of titles by publisher are available, all at less than the total cost
of subscribing to the print editions of the journals included. As in the past,
libraries will also be able to pick and choose single title subscriptions, with
electronic-only journals priced at 90% of the print edition, and special
combined print and electronic subscriptions priced at 130% of the print rate.

Libraries opting for either the complete database or one of the
discipline-oriented packages may take an extra 10% off the list price for orders
that are received and paid no later than January 31, 2000. This discount may
not be combined with any category or consortial discounts and applies only to
orders placed at full list price.

The list price for the complete Project MUSE Full Database of 112 titles is
$8000, even lower than the figure projected when MUSE's expansion was
announced. This broad collection of quality journal literature provides
excellent value for a cost less than that of some single periodical titles in
the sciences. The Arts & Humanities Package, consisting of 86 titles, has a
list price of $6,200. A Social Sciences Package containing 50 titles is
available for $3,750.

Publisher packages are offered for collections of titles from five of the
participating presses, including the Johns Hopkins University Press. The JHUP
package is essentially the same database currently accessed by Project MUSE full
database customers, with a few changes resulting from the addition and deletion
of certain journals from our publishing program. The publisher packages are
priced as follows: Johns Hopkins University Press (45 titles) $3,450, Duke
University Press (24 titles) $2,050, Indiana University Press (13 titles) $825,
Pennsylvania State University Press (9 titles) $370, University of Hawaii Press
(9 titles) $280.

Project MUSE will continue to offer discounts on MUSE subscriptions to certain
categories of libraries, and volume discounts for orders from library consortia
and networks. Consortium discounts will apply to the four largest database
packages; Full Database, Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences and the JHUP
Package. Consortia members may "mix and match" their subscriptions among these
four packages and the volume discount for the group will be determined by the
total number of subscribing members. Category discounts for small academic
libraries, community/junior colleges, public libraries, high schools and special
libraries will apply to all of the packages offered. As in the past, category
and consortial discounts will be compounded if a library qualifies for both. No
discounts are offered on single title orders.

Lists of the specific journal titles included in the various Project MUSE
packages offered for subscription in 2000 may be found on the MUSE Web site. A
complete list of the titles in MUSE for 2000 (the Full Database Package) may be
found at http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/listbytitle.html. Details on the
Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences Packages are at
http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/listbydiscipline.html, and title lists for the
publisher packages are at http://muse.jhu.edu/proj_descrip/listbypub.html.

Project MUSE was launched in 1995 by the Johns Hopkins University Press, in
collaboration with the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University,
to offer the full text of JHUP scholarly journals via the world wide web. In
1999, MUSE publishes online 46 JHUP titles in the humanities, social sciences
and mathematics, which are available for institutional subscriptions either as a
package or individually. Project MUSE has been hailed for its library-friendly
licensing and usage policies, easy online navigation, reasonable pricing, and
generous discount plans for consortia and various categories of libraries.

The Johns Hopkins University Press is one of the country's oldest and largest
university presses, publishing more than 170 books each year and 52 scholarly
journals. By long tradition the Press has published with distinction in such
disciplines as literary studies, classics, history, economics, political
science, and the history of science and medicine. Its innovative publishing
program embraces both traditional and newer modes of scholarly communication.

Sample journal issues and more information about Project MUSE may be accessed
online at: http://muse.jhu.edu. Trial access to the entire Project MUSE
database may be arranged for media review and for prospective subscribers by
contacting Melanie Vandermark, Marketing and Sales Manager for Online Products
at the JohnsHopkins University Press. Please call 410-516-3846 or email

Please be advised that access to the Project MUSE server will be interrupted for
up to three hours on Monday, June 28, between 3:00am and 6:00am EST. This
outage is the result of a physical relocation of the Johns Hopkins University's

Subject: Join MUSE for brunch in New Orleans!

Dear MUSE Subscriber,

Project MUSE will be hosting a meeting for current and prospective subscribers
at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. We are not exhibiting at
ALA Annual this year, so this will be the best opportunity for you to get
information about new developments with MUSE and to raise any questions
or concerns.

The meeting is scheduled for Sunday morning, June 27, from 8:00 - 11:00 am, in
the Crescent Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel (300 Canal St.). Please plan to
join us as we announce the details of Project MUSE's expansion to include titles
from other university presses, "packaging" plans for the expanded title list,
preliminary pricing for next year, Y2K compliance, and hardware/software
upgrades that will be implemented July 1. Jim Neal, Dean of University
Libraries at Johns Hopkins University, will share his thoughts on the growth of
MUSE since its launch just five years ago. We plan to distribute a confirmed
list of the new titles to be offered in MUSE in 2000 at the meeting. There will
be a Q&A period, and a New Orleans style brunch will be served.

Please feel free to distribute the details of this meeting to your colleagues at
your institution as you see fit. If you will not be attending ALA, you are
welcome to pass the invitation on to a colleague who may be able to join us.
To assist us with our planning, we are asking for RSVP's via email to
melanie@jhupress.jhu.edu. Libraries are welcome to send more than one
representative to the meeting.

We hope to see you in the Crescent City!

Regards,
Melanie Vandermark

P.S. Please note that this meeting has been moved from the room to which it was
originally assigned. The CRESCENT BALLROOM is the correct location, not
Madewood B as initially announced.

Subject: Project MUSE Expansion Plans

IMPORTANT: SUBSCRIBER FEEDBACK REQUESTED ON PROJECT MUSE EXPANSION PLANS
Your prompt response is appreciated!

Dear Project MUSE Subscriber,

The first three years of Project MUSE have been an unqualified success, in no
small part thanks to the continued support of subscribing institutions such as
yours. We now have some exciting news regarding the next phase of our online
journals project, and are hoping you can provide us with some feedback regarding
our plans.

Right now, MUSE management is in discussion with several other university press
and not-for profit publishers who have expressed an interest in joining our
project. We are evaluating their journal titles and considering how we may best
integrate these into our collection, allowing MUSE to grow and offer more
respected scholarly literature to our customers. Our hope for the next phase of
MUSE is to expand our holdings of quality, peer-reviewed scholarly journals to
approximately 100 titles, more than double our current number of titles.

Among the issues we face with the addition of titles from other publishers are
how to price and package these new titles to best meet our subscribers' needs.
As we operate under a cost recovery model, the addition of more titles to the
MUSE database would require a proportional increase in price to cover the
production and administrative costs associated with the new journals. We are
also looking at more and different subscription package plans that would allow a
library to select the best option for their patrons' research needs.

As a project that has been shaped from the start by the feedback and suggestions
of our customers, we are now seeking direction from you in how we can best
expand MUSE to continue to make it an attractive and useful resource for your
institution. May we ask for a few minutes of your time to respond to an online
survey regarding the next phase of Project MUSE? Please visit the URL
http://www.press.jhu.edu/expansion/survey.html and simply fill out the online
survey. It would be most helpful if you could respond no later than Friday,
March 12, 1999. We appreciate your time, and the comments you provide will be
taken into serious consideration as we formulate our future plans.

Thank you for your continued support of Project MUSE.

Sincerely,

MANAGER APPOINTED FOR PROJECT MUSE AT THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY PRESS

J. Mark Nolan to oversee development of acclaimed online journals project

Baltimore, MD -- The Johns Hopkins University Press (JHUP) announces the
appointment of J. Mark Nolan as project manager for Project MUSE. A database of
scholarly journals in the humanities and social sciences, MUSE offers online
subscription access to the full text of 46 JHUP titles.

"We are delighted to have someone with Mark's commendable experience in digital
publishing and online subscription services joining our team at this crucial
juncture," said Marie Hansen, associate director and journals manager at JHUP.
"I am confident he will take MUSE to the next level in terms of our content
and service to our subscribers."

Project MUSE is entering a much-anticipated period of expansion in 1999. One of
Nolan's primary missions will be to shepherd the Project into this next phase,
broadening the database's full-text offerings with the addition of journal
titles from other university presses and scholarly publishers. He will also
focus on increasing the accessibility of the titles in MUSE through "gateway"
arrangements with indexing and searching services, such as those already in
place with OCLC's FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online and EBSCO Online.
Additionally, he will oversee all operations including sales and marketing
activities, customer service and technical development for the Project.

Nolan will report to Marie Hansen, who retains overall responsibility for
Project MUSE and JHUP's journals program, one of the largest among American
university presses.

Nolan brings to JHUP over a decade of experience in the management, marketing
and delivery of subscription-based products, most recently as an account manager
with Lexis-Nexis. His work with the provider of the world's largest online
information database garnered him numerous awards and national recognition for
his expertise in training, teamwork, strategic planning, and customer service.

Prior to Lexis-Nexis, Nolan oversaw a highly successful subscription service
program as a sales manager for Business Risks International, and served as
manager, special projects, for The Wackenhut Corporation. He is a graduate of
West Virginia Wesleyan College and member of the Law Librarians Association
of Maryland.

Hailed as a revolutionary electronic scholarly publishing venture, Project MUSE
provides internet access worldwide to the full text of JHUP journals. Over 600
institutions currently hold subscriptions to the entire database. From any
computer on the campus network at a subscribing institution, users may search,
view, download, and print unlimited journal articles from the MUSE database for
noncommercial, scholarly use. The Project MUSE homepage is located at

Technology. The journal debuted online with Volume 39, Issue 3 (July 1998).
With readers including engineers, anthropologists, sociologists, museum curators
and archivists, among others, recent issues of the journal have focused on
biomedical technology, engineering in the twentieth century, patents and
inventions, and gender and technology.

SEL STUDIES IN ENGLISH LITERATURE 1500-1900 DEBUTS ONLINE IN PROJECT MUSE

Project MUSE continues to expand its horizons with the addition of more quality
scholarly titles. Debuting online with Volume 39, Issue 1 (February 1999), SEL
Studies in English Literature 1500-1900 is another long-established journal
