Subject: Project Muse at ALA

Dear Project Muse Consortial Partners,

We have some news about Project Muse's plans for the 1998 ALA Annual Conference
in Washington that we thought might be of interest to you and your members.
Please feel free to forward this information to your member libraries, reprint
it in a newsletter, post it on a website, etc.

On Saturday, June 27, Project Muse will host a Users Group Breakfast from
7:30am-9:30am, in the Terrace Ballroom of the DoubleTree Park Terrace (1515
Rhode Island Avenue). This will be an excellent opportunity for current Muse
subscribers to present any questions or concerns to our staff and to exchange
ideas with each other regarding successfully promoting use of the resource on
their campus. New developments in Muse will be discussed, including our
relationships with aggregators and outside vendors such as OCLC, JSTOR, and
major subscription agents. Feedback and suggestions from subscribers are
encouraged. There will be a brief program and then ample time for discussion
and Q&A. A light continental breakfast will be available. While the focus will
be on current subscribers, those who are interested but not yet subscribed
are welcome as well.

However, we recommend that those who are currently considering a Muse
subscription attend our second event. On Monday, June 29, Project Muse invites
interested librarians to attend a Muse demonstration and reception at the Loews
L'Enfant Plaza (480 L'Enfant Plaza) in the Grand Ballroom, from 5:30pm-7:30pm.
An informative program covering various aspects of the Project will begin at
6pm, with time reserved for Q&A after a live demonstration of the database.
Technical specifications, subscription options, copyright issues, archiving
concerns, business partnerships and future plans will be covered. Cocktails and
hot/cold hors d'oeuvres will be served. RSVP is requested in order to assist us
with our planning for this event.

Formal invitations for both of these events will be available later in May. All
current Muse subscribers will be sent a notice about the Users Group Breakfast
directly, unless you inform us that you prefer we send the announcements to your
office for distribution. The Breakfast will also be listed in the official
conference program. If you would like to request a quantity of invitations for
the evening reception for a mailing to your non-subscribed members, please let
me know how many you will need *no later* than Monday, May 11. We will also be
mailing reception invitations from our office to selected in-house lists.

In addition to these special events, Project Muse will be exhibiting at the
conference. Please stop by, and encourage your members to do the same -- we
will be in Booth #3478. "Live" online demonstrations of Muse will be available
and staff will be on hand to answer questions regarding the database and
subscription plans. If you would like to schedule a meeting in advance, please
feel free to email or call me anytime.

Please let me know if you have any questions or require further details. We
look forward to seeing you in Washington!

Best Regards,
Melanie Vandermark

Subject: Project Muse Archival CD-ROMs

Dear Project Muse Subscriber,

The 1997 Project Muse Archive is completed and ready for production. This
archive consists of two UNIX-Based CD-ROMs, containing all of the Project Muse
journal articles published online during the 1997 calendar year. As this is the
first archive produced, we are also including all pre-1997 files published
online as part of Muse's pilot program. Future archives will contain only the
articles published online during the previous calendar year subscription term.

As a not-for-profit Project, we must strive to keep our costs low. Therefore,
we would prefer to only produce as many copies of this archive as are actually
needed by our subscribers.

****If you wish to have a copy of the 1997 Project Muse Archive for your
library, we are asking for the courtesy of a reply no later than APRIL 17, 1998.****

We will only produce as many copies of the archive as we have requests by the
end of the day on April 17, so please let us know as soon as possible if you
will need the archive. If you represent a consortium of Muse subscribers,
please reply with the exact number of copies of the archive that you require for
the subscribing libraries in your group. If you *do not* need a copy of the
1997 Project Muse Archive, no response is necessary.

We appreciate your assistance in keeping our overhead costs low. Thank you for
helping to make 1997 a successful year for Project Muse!

Best Regards,
Melanie Vandermark
