TOOLS & TIPS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* New MUSE Website

MUSE launched its newly designed website in August. Highlights of the
new design include:

- Left and right navigation bars to facilitate access to information on
the site
- Horizontal tabs along the top of the pages for a consistent look and
a direct path to information
specific to librarians and publishers.
- Prominent links to information about MUSE and for subscribing to
MUSE
- Prominent links to training guides, usage statistics, journal
homepages, journal holdings information.
- Search box in the upper right corner on all pages; a convenient way
to initiate a quick search of MUSE
journals content.
- Ability to search only the informational pages; to quickly locate key
details such as pricing, upcoming
journal additions, or supported technologies.
- Indicators that show to which content users have full text access, at
both the journal and article level
- Linked subject headings. Linked LCSH in each article help users
locate more articles related to their
research topic.

New Functions at the Article Level:

- Ability to email a link to the article
- Ability to find more MUSE articles by the same author(s)
- Ability to download/export a citation
- Ability to explore topics by subject with linked LCSH subject
headings
- Ability to bookmark and share using links to popular social
bookmarking web sites

Upcoming New Features

Coming later during the fall and winter:
- Reference linking and a “Related Articles” list at the journal
article level
- New cover sheet for the PDF versions of articles with functionality
comparable to the HTML articles
- SUSHI (Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative)
implementation (MUSE is seeking library testing partners for this
feature. Libraries interested in participating in SUSHI testing should
contact MUSE Customer Support at muse at press.jhu.edu.

We welcome feedback, comments and questions about the new website. To
comment, send an email to muse at press.jhu.edu.

* MUSE on Facebook

MUSE has a page on Facebook. Visit the MUSE page to:

- Become a fan of MUSE; write on our wall or tell us what you think
about the new MUSE website.
- Run a search for articles in MUSE using the search application on the
page. The new search box that
appears on each page of the MUSE website also displays on the MUSE
page on Facebook.
- Add the MUSE search application to your own Facebook page.

Check out the MUSE page at:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOOLS & TIPS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* New look for journal articles in Project MUSE

Earlier this year, MUSE announced that it was updating the look of its
website to improve navigation and the user experience when searching
journal content in MUSE. The first phase of updating has just been
unveiled: a new look for the journal articles. MUSE has updated the
look and format of the article page to provide users with more
functionality and more information specific to the article, such as DOI
and LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings) assigned to an article.

The new format debuted in late April. The new format applies to content
recently added and to articles added from April forward. Articles with
dates prior to April 2008 will be converted to the new format in a
phased approach. As we go through the conversion of back articles, you
may see both formats for articles in your search results, the old format
and the new with the added functionality and options. NOTE: the new
format applies to the HTML version of articles. Please let us know of
any comments you have about the new look of the articles. To comment,
send an email to muse@press.jhu.edu.

* Project MUSE Awarded KnowledgeWorks Certification

Project MUSE has been awarded the designation 'KnowledgeWorks
Certified' by long time partner Serials Solutions. MUSE is among the
first content providers to receive this new designation that was created
by Serials Solutions to acknowledge content providers and publishers
with whom they have developed the best possible working relationships.

MUSE has partnered with Serials Solutions for many years to provide
mutual customers with access to MUSE bibliographic metadata and content.
MUSE easily met all the criteria for the new certification, which
included:
- ability to provide periodically updated title lists
- specific bibliographic data
- direct delivery of the data to Serials Solutions in an agreed upon
format.

Mutual customers of Project MUSE and Serials Solutions benefit directly
from this formal recognition of the sharing and delivery of data between
the two: librarians can be assured of receiving high quality
bibliographic data for their Project MUSE collection and the best
possible access to the collection.

* MUSE MARC Records Now Available

MUSE now offers MARC records for journals in each of MUSE's six
collections. MUSE developed the MARC records in response to requests
from librarians. The record sets include:
- full level description in the MARC21 format
- Library of Congress (LC) subject headings
- journals launched as of the beginning of the current
subscription year
- updates added periodically during the year as new journals are
launched.

The MUSE MARC records are available for downloading from the MUSE
website and are offered to subscribing institutions at no charge. For
additional details and instructions for downloading, please refer to the
MARC Records page on the MUSE website:
http://muse.jhu.edu/content/ml/about/librarians/marc_records.html.

* Back Issues Pilot Program

Project MUSE recently added the full range of back issues of two of its
long-held journals:
- Journal of the History of Philosophy
- Journal of Democracy

These back issues were added to the MUSE collections at no additional
charge to subscribers.

The addition of the back issues of these two journals is part of a
pilot program at MUSE to determine the feasibility of expanding coverage
to include back issues. We are in the early stages of the pilot program
and anticipate adding additional back issues for selected journals
published by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

Current issues of the "Journal of the History of Philosophy" are
available to subscribers of MUSE's Premium, Standard, Basic Research,
Basic College, and Humanities Collections. Subscribers now have access
to all the back issues: Vol. 1, 1963, - Vol. 37, 1999.

Current issues of the "Journal of Democracy" are available to
subscribers of the Premium, Standard, Basic Research, Basic College, and
Social Sciences Collections. Subscribers to those collections now have
access to all back issues: Vol. 1, 1990, - Vol. 5, 1994.

* Training and Promotional material available

Find free MUSE training and promotional material on the For Librarians
page, http://muse.jhu.edu/content/ml/about/librarians.

2008 Title Information
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Title List Change for 2008
One additional title will join the list of titles previously announced
for inclusion in the 2008 Premium Collection and Standard Collection:
"Transition" published by the Indiana University Press. This title is
being added to both collections at no additional charge.

The journal is currently an archive title in the Premium Collection and
the Standard Collection. MUSE will relaunch the title in 2008 beginning
with Number 98. Existing MUSE past issues of this journal, volumes
9(2000)-10(2001), remain available in both the Premium and Standard
collections. There are no plans to fill in the gaps between coverage
years in MUSE due to image matters with the back issues.

A complete list of all new titles for 2008 along with a list of updates
to all collections may be found at
http://muse.jhu.edu/content/ml/about/subscriptions/newtitles_2008.html.
