TOOLS & TIPS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Browser search plugin
Project MUSE now offers a search plugin for your web browser. The MUSE search plugin adds Project MUSE to the list of search engines that are available in the search box in the upper right corner on your browser. When you add the Project MUSE search plugin, you may search MUSE any time your browser is open regardless of the web page you are viewing.
The Project MUSE search plugin can be added to any browser that supports Sherlock and OpenSearch Search Engine Plugins. Installation is easy and takes just a couple of seconds. To read about and install the Project MUSE search plugin, please go to http://muse.jhu.edu/content/ml/about/librarians/search_plugin.html.
* RSS Feeds
MUSE added a new feed: Upcoming Journals for 2008. This feed provides a list of all titles confirmed to join MUSE in 2008 with subsequent notification when each of the new titles first becomes available online. Recommend this feed to faculty and grad students who may want immediate notification when a particular title becomes available online in MUSE.
Read about and subscribe to MUSE RSS feeds at the MUSE RSS Syndication page: http://feeds.muse.jhu.edu.
* Watch for MUSE survey in December
MUSE will be asking for your participation in an online survey in early December. The survey will be seeking your suggestions for how to make the MUSE website and associated promotional materials more helpful for you. MUSE would like as many people as possible to take the survey (no more than 5 minutes of your time) so we encourage you to pass along the survey URL to your colleagues. We look forward to all of your suggestions. Please watch for the announcement in early December that will explain how to access the survey.
* New option for refining searches in Advanced search
The new option allows for limiting searches by document type: All (types of articles); Reviews; Poetry; Fiction or Drama. The document type limit along with the limits by date, journal or subject, give users the ability to fine-tune their searches for more focused results.
* 10,000 links with MLA
The electronic version of the MLA International Bibliography now links to MUSE. Citations listed in the MLA International Bibliography now link to MUSE articles included in the approximately 200 MUSE journals covered by the Bibliography. The links include current as well as previous years' articles with over 10,000 links to MUSE articles created.
The linking between MLA and Project MUSE streamlines access to articles in MUSE from citations listed in the electronic version of the MLA International Bibliography, regardless of the platform used to access the Bibliography. For MUSE subscribers, the linking provides seamless access to the full text articles in MUSE from citations in the electronic International Bibliography.
* Training and Promotional material available

COMMENTS & DISCUSSION
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The topic for discussion this issue is social networking tools and the extent to which these tools have been incorporated into everyday use at your institution and library.
*** Are your students and faculty using social bookmarking sites?
*** Do students have preferred sites to mark their favorites?
*** What are the sites favored by your faculty?
We'd love to hear any and all ideas, including ideas for things that do not work or are not appealing to students and faculty. Please feel free to use this as an opportunity to share ideas, strategies, successes and frustrations in using MUSE to support faculty and students. Send your ideas and comments, or suggestions for future topics for this section to Kathy Obbagy at KO@press.jhu.edu. TOOLS & TIPS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* OpenURL Linking expanded
MUSE now supports OpenURL 1.0 which provides linking for search results
to journals for which no subscription exists. When a user searches in
MUSE journals not subscribed by their institution and tries to retrieve
articles from those journals on the results page, they are referred to
the turnaway page. This page tells them that their institution does not
subscribe to the journal. Now, with the expanded OpenURL linking, the
user will see a link, or button, for alternative resources for the
article at their institution.
In order for the link back to the institution to appear, an institution
must register with MUSE to enable the linking to their OpenURL-compliant
linking servers. All institutions are encouraged to provide MUSE with a
customized icon and message to display for the link to the
institution's linking server.
Many institutions had registered with MUSE for an earlier application
of OpenURL (0.1) and therefore, do not need to register again for the
expanded implementation.
To register and enable links to your OpenURL-compliant linking server
for citations retrieved in Project MUSE searches (in journals to which
your institution does not subscribe) go to the online form Enable
OpenURL Links that is found on the For Librarians page,
http://muse.jhu.edu/about/librarians. The expanded implementation of
OpenURL is part of an ongoing effort by MUSE to provide more options for
subscribers and their users. OpenURL linking in MUSE is available only
to subscribers of the six MUSE collections and not to single title
subscribers.
* RSS Feeds
RSS feed is a great tool for receiving and organizing updates from your
favorite web sites, news sources, library blogs and other sites you go
to for information. MUSE offers 2 feeds that automatically keep you
up-to-date with MUSE journals:
1. Latest Issues - This feed has links to the Tables of Contents for
the 4 most recent issues of a journal with direct access to the full
text articles from the Tables of Contents for MUSE subscribers.
~~ With this convenient tool, RSS feed subscribers, such as faculty,
can stay abreast of the content in a particular MUSE journal, or
journals, by easily scanning the Tables of Contents of the 4 most recent
issues.
2. Upcoming Titles for 2007 - This feed provides a list of all titles
scheduled to join MUSE in 2007 with subsequent notification when each of
the new titles first becomes available online.
~~ This is a handy tool for receiving notification automatically, and
immediately, when new titles are launched online in MUSE. Good for
faculty or grad students who may be waiting for a particular title to be
available online.
Subscribe to MUSE RSS feeds at the MUSE RSS Syndication page:
http://feeds.muse.jhu.edu.
* Email Journal Alerts
For those who prefer to receive their journal updates by email (rather
than RSS feed), the Email Alerts provide weekly e-mail notifications of
new journal issues or new titles available in Project MUSE. Sign up to
receive email alerts by journal title, by subject or by the collection
to which your institution subscribes.
To read more and to subscribe, go to the For Librarians page,
http://muse.jhu.edu/about/librarians and click on the link for
'Sign up for Email Journal Alerts' in the Tools and Forms section
of the page.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2008 Pricing and Title Information
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Pricing for 2008
Project MUSE 2008 pricing has been confirmed for all collections. MUSE
continues to offer North American academic libraries a tiered pricing
model for its six collections, allowing libraries of all sizes the
opportunity to access the collection that best meets each
institution's mission and budget. The tiered model provides
discounts off the list price based on Carnegie classification and
relative usage.
The 2008 list prices for the six collections are:
Premium Collection - $30,800
Standard Collection - $22,700
Basic Research Collection - $19,100
Basic College Collection - $11,000 (formerly Basic Undergraduate
Collection)
Humanities Collection - $12,100 (collection revised for 2008)
Social Sciences Collection - $8,500 (collection revised for 2008)
The pricing reflects the growth in each of these collections, with over
30 new journals added to the Premium Collection and a limited number of
titles moving into the other collections. For complete 2008 North
American academic pricing information, go to
http://muse.jhu.edu/about/subscriptions/pricing_academic_2008.html.
Non-academic libraries and those outside North America should contact
muse@muse.jhu.edu for 2008 pricing details.
* New Titles for 2008
Currently, thirty titles and five new publishers have been confirmed
for inclusion in MUSE in 2008. Additional titles are in negotiation and
will be announced later in the summer. In total, MUSE expects to add
between 30 and 35 journals for the upcoming subscription year. All new
titles confirmed to date and those announced afterwards will be included
in the Premium Collection.
Selected titles, either new or currently offered, will also be added to
three of MUSE's existing collections: Standard Collection, Basic
Research Collection, and Basic College Collection (formerly Basic
Undergraduate Collection). A complete list of new journals being added
to each collection for 2008 is available at
http://muse.jhu.edu/about/subscriptions/new_titles_2008.html
Additional details about MUSE's 2008 collections and subscription
options will be available on the MUSE website by August. Specifics about
renewal pricing and subscription options will be sent to MUSE's
consortium partners later this summer. Institutions that subscribe via a
consortium arrangement should inquire about their renewal options with
their consortium offices.

COMMENTS & DISCUSSION
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the many thought provoking discussions at the recent ALA Annual
Conference concerned how librarians are marketing humanities resources
to students and faculty.
** How are you getting the word out about the variety of resources
available at your library?
** What materials or marketing pieces could MUSE provide you with in
this effort?
** For faculty, what kind of informational piece from MUSE would really
grab their attention and earn you kudos for suggesting MUSE?
We'd love to hear any and all ideas, including ideas for things that
do not work or are not appealing to students and faculty. Please feel
free to use this as an opportunity to share ideas, strategies, successes
and frustrations in using MUSE to support faculty and students. Send
your ideas and comments, or suggestions for future topics for this
section to Kathy Obbagy at KO@press.jhu.edu. All responses received will
appear anonymously (unless otherwise requested by the person writing) in
the next newsletter.

TOOLS & TIPS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Revised and Improved Tool for Creating List of Journal Holdings
MUSE offers librarians a tool for creating a customized list of Project MUSE journals that can be used for updating local holdings. One can download data such as URL, electronic and print ISSN, date coverage, and publisher. The tool includes titles currently online in MUSE and titles scheduled to join MUSE in 2007. Data can be downloaded in either comma delimited or Excel format. To access this tool, go to: http://muse.jhu.edu/content/ml/holdings.
* MUSE Launches OAI
MUSE data can now be accessed through OAI - Open Archives Initiative. OAI capability facilitates the exchange of metadata between MUSE and institutions issuing OAI commands to MUSE. For details, see the FAQ at http://muse.jhu.edu/content/ml/about/muse/faq.html.
* MUSE Searchable by OAIster Catalog of Digital Resources
An immediate benefit of MUSE metadata made accessible through OAI (Open Archives Initiative) is that MUSE was just accepted into the repository of searchable digital resources at OAIster. OAIster, maintained by the University of Michigan, is a union catalog of digital resources from over 740 contributors (national and international) including research institutes, virtual museums, historical societies, dissertation collections, and the CDL, California Digital Library. OAIster searches resources known as the 'deep web' that are made available through Open Archives Initiative.
